2nd Trimester

Don't read if you freak out easily

I'm out at a client this week and she was telling me how her husband has baby fever again, but she doesn't think she wants more. She goes on to say how she and her son almost died during birth. Apparently there is a vein by your placenta. (I should stress, I'm an accountant not a dr so I probably have this messed up a little, but the story's the same). Anyway, this major vein was on the outside, when it's usually well covered by tissue, muscle, etc. There isn't a way to know ahead of time, only after the birth when you deliver the placenta. She said the doctors and nurses all started freaking out because if they would've hit it while they were examining her, or even if the baby had KICKED it she would've bled out!! They said baby would've died within 5 minutes and she would've died within another five!! There wouldn't have been enough time to get to the hospital, much less diagnose or do a c-section. I can see her hesitation with getting pregnant again! Sorry if I scared anyone, I just thought it was interesting!

Re: Don't read if you freak out easily

  • wow what a crazy story! I don't freak out easily at all, and I just add this to the other millions of freak things that can happen to you while in labor.

  • That sounds NUTS. It's gotta be a one in a million chance type thing and she is just the lucky recipient. I can see her hesitation too! Maybe they should adopt ;)

  • I don't either since I figure worrying isn't going to help or change anything. Which is good I guess, because my little girl was moving and kicking during the time she was telling me this!
  • Wow, Thats crazy. i dont think i'd be able to have another baby after having all that happen to me.

  • That's crazy!     I don't freak out too much either over stories from L&D.   I've already had one rare outcome, so I'm hoping that that's all I get:)
  • This is called vasa previa. The artery that goes to the center of the placenta normally is running through the thin sac of the amniotic bag. It is extremely scary. I have been a labor nurse for 4 years. I have seen it maybe 4 times, never my patient.

  • Yeah same thing happend to both my mom and my sister. They had to be transfused and everything. Not something to freak about, death in childbirth is pretty rare nowadays.

  • That is freaky. I just read the stats about this and googled vasa previa.

  • I heard about this happening to one of my spa clients. But she said it's incredibly rare. So I wouldn't be concerned.
