I'm out at a client this week and she was telling me how her husband has baby fever again, but she doesn't think she wants more. She goes on to say how she and her son almost died during birth. Apparently there is a vein by your placenta. (I should stress, I'm an accountant not a dr so I probably have this messed up a little, but the story's the same). Anyway, this major vein was on the outside, when it's usually well covered by tissue, muscle, etc. There isn't a way to know ahead of time, only after the birth when you deliver the placenta. She said the doctors and nurses all started freaking out because if they would've hit it while they were examining her, or even if the baby had KICKED it she would've bled out!! They said baby would've died within 5 minutes and she would've died within another five!! There wouldn't have been enough time to get to the hospital, much less diagnose or do a c-section. I can see her hesitation with getting pregnant again! Sorry if I scared anyone, I just thought it was interesting!

This is called vasa previa. The artery that goes to the center of the placenta normally is running through the thin sac of the amniotic bag. It is extremely scary. I have been a labor nurse for 4 years. I have seen it maybe 4 times, never my patient.
That is freaky. I just read the stats about this and googled vasa previa.
Whoa.
