Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

One of my classmates is pregnant

I was congratulating her today and asked what she thought she was going to do about school (if you don't know me, I'm a dental student).  She said "well I'm thinking I'm just going to take a couple days off."

I laughed because I thought she was kidding.  Nope, she wasn't.  2-3 days off is her plan.

We'll see if she wants to be working on a denture while she's wearing the mesh undies and passing blood clots the size of golf balls...

  • Tell her I said, "good luck with that."  I say that in the nicest way possible.
  • Wow.
BabyFetus Ticker Blessed with a girl and boy, number 3 due 5/5/12!
  • I work with a nurse that was back doing a 12hr shift 1 wk after having her little one.  She has a lot of kids and I assume money is needed.  She worked one shift a week for awhile.
  • Wow.  I hope that works out for her....She'll see :)

  • **shakes head**

What did you say when you found out she wasn't kidding????

  • I was in 4 year college not dental school but I was back in class in 6 days. It is not that crazy imo. I did it.
  • Shake your heads all you want. The semester I had my son I went to school full time; Mon, Tues, Wed. I had him Tuesday and went back the following Monday. Technically, I missed 1 day of classes. It is possible. Thankfully, I had a very well-behaved baby who slept through the night very quickly.

Well... dental school involves a lot of running around and a lottt of stress and getting yelled at, and much longer hours... it is pretty different from college, at least in my experience.

I am actually concerned for her, she seems pretty clueless about what is going to be involved.  But I didn't want to be the one to burst her bubble or tell her what to do!

When I had my son, it was my hardest semester at school. A lot of hands on and large projects. I'm not sure dental school is "pretty different from college." If someone goes to a 4 year school, they'll be working their buns off just like anyone else who goes to college. She'll be fine. Especially if she's determined to prove everyone else wrong.

I wasn't trying to offend anyone, just clarifying that it's a doctoral program like medical school (I mean, you go to 4-year college and then dental school to get your DMD).

I certainly hope everything works out for her, but I have to say I am raising my eyebrows that she thinks just a few days off will be enough.

  • I think she'll do fine. I'm not saying it was easy at all. I was pretty tired and I worked late, late nights doing homework. I'm not sure how far you are into the program, but my guess is she won't take longer off if she's come this far already. It can be done and she'll prove most people wrong :)

  • I was going to school and back at work at 6 weeks too. I just think sometimes people might be more capable then you think.

I mean really which one of us really knew what it was going to be like? Of course she doesn't. It doesn't mean she won't push through though.

I think that post on the working moms board last week really made me a little irritable at people saying omg they have no idea and laughing at them.

I get that it's not something people want to do, or most people could do. But if you have worked for something that hard for awhile you are not going to let child birth stand in your way.

Look at the Olympic skater last night who had a baby in October. All the training she had to do in that time. Amazing!

    Sometimes people will amaze you.

FWIW I was back at school and my baby never slept through the night. I mean never. I wasn't done school until she was 9 months old. I was up ever 2 hours for the first 4 months because of her reflux.

    Don't underestimate her ;)

    Amen! :)

I'm right there with you. I still had about a year left when Gav was born. I knew I wasn't taking time off or going to get bad grades when I was "this" close! :) I actually had my best grades my last 3 semesters of school... when I was a mom! :)

  • I definitely realize that people can continue on in the program with a baby... I did it :)

A couple days off, though, with this type of program, I'm going to maintain that that's a little unrealistic.

  • jules you're right- dental school is a LOTTTTTTT harder than getting a bachelors.  i am being totally serious.

anyone who can spell their name can get a four year degree.  i would certainly expect that someone who drills my teeth and pulls them out would have a much harder course load. (and i know you do jules you are a denture phenomenon, srsly, i have proof)

  • Regardless of how hard a program is, I think a 'couple days off' is pretty nuts! I remember with my first I was so beat after the delivery! He was a c-section though. I guess it's possible, but there's no way in hell I could have done it:) Best of luck to her!

DD was born on Friday and I went back to school next Wed. I finished that semester which was my last semester for my undergrad... I also don't think that's crazy.

  • I moved cross country and started graduate school 3 weeks post partum after an abnormally massive c/s.

I hope to have my next LO the first year of doctoral program and hope to not miss any more than a week or so. I'm psycho though.

  • I had the easiest labor/delivery and still wouldn't have felt up to jumping back into school. But a girl I knew had two babies during nursing school. She only missed two days with each. BF both of them and was never late. Not sure how she did it, but it is possible for some!
  • I hope for her sake she doesn't need a C/S.  I went back to school part time about 3 weeks after my C-section with Sarah.  Anything less and I would have wanted to die.

  • i have a good friend who has 3 kids and had the third during her 2nd year of law school.  she took 2 weeks medical leave off and was back at it.  i don't know how she does it though - THREE kids and law school and she's top of her class.  wowza.

  • Fingers crossed that she has an easy delivery or at least a killer support system so that she can jump right back in.

I know that I wouldn't want to do it but I'm a lazy lima bean.

BTW, GL with school! For some reason, Dentists fascinate me.

  • The way I see it....I will feel just as crappy at home as I would at school, so I might as well go to school. I made my H drive me to my building and pick me up until I was allowed to drive again. We have some killer hills on this campus.
