finger foods and snack questions

These may be stupid questions but....How do babies eat cheerios...if they only have two teeth? and when did you start giving them to your LO? and what are puffs?  My dr. did not mention giving finger food at all.....did yours or are you just giving them on your own.  I know it is a milestone to be able to feed yourself...but when is it a milestone for??  I know a lot of questions but I figured since we were on the topic tonight I should ask these questions which I have been wondering for a while.  TIA :)

My DS eats cheerios & he has no teeth. We just introduced those to him though. We started with Puffs (check the baby section at the grocery store, walmart, etc.) because they are easy for him to figure out.. they dissolve quickly. Now he knows to just chomp with his gums :)

  • I don't know that it is really a milestone, because every child begins eating at different times (some 4 months, some 6 months, some later - some don't get finger foods until much later - some only ever get finger foods (baby led weaning)).

But as to how they eat the softer finger foods or those that disintegrate easily (like puffs/cheerios/mums/graham crackers) - they chew them with their jaws/gums. Grant has 8 teeth - but of course, they are all in the front area - he crushes things with his jaws/gums.

  • It's not really a milestone but once LO can use the pincher grasp finger foods can be introduced (per pedi anyway). DD doesn't have teeth and does Cheerios, puffs, yogurt melts and a variety of table foods. She gums everything and does really well.

I would say if LO seems interested I'd start with puffs, they melt quickly and reduce the choking hazard.
