Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Please help, trying to decide if I should go to ER or not.

I think I have the flu- been throwing up and my whole body hurts. Starting around 7pm I've had 3 contractions or brax hicks, I can't tell. With DD I didn't feel any contrax or b.h until they started pitocin, so all I have to go on is pitocin contrax. Anyways, my whole belly feels tight and thr lower part feels like a bad period cramp. It lasts for less than a minute than stops. My mom thinks I am having diarrhea cramps that come with the flu but no diarrhea. I'm drinking some water to see if they stop. WWYD?

  • Sounds scary.  Have you called the on-call at your OB's office?  They may send you to triage in L&D over the ER - which would be less sucky . . .

  • When in doubt, go to the ER and have yourself checked out.
  • sounds like contrax to me. I would go.
  • Call you doctor first and if you can't get ahold of them, go to the ER.

  • I would say drink some water if you can and lay down.  If that still doesn't work, I would call your doctor for advice on what to do next.

  • I would go. It kind of sounds like contractions to me but hard to tell. Better to be safe then sorry. Also, if you've been throwing up a lot you need to make sure you're not getting dehydrated. They might give you fluids which would make you feel better.

  • Call your OB on their emergency line. Sounds like you may be dehydrated. Drink water and lay on your left side. But I would probably go tonight just to be safe.

  • Do you have a nurse hot line you can call?

I'm not trying to freak you out, but I had vomitting and diarrhea at 24 weeks.  It turned out to be appendicitis.  Honestly, if you are feeling scared, go.

  • I would drink some water, lay down for an hour if it doesn't get better call your OB and go to L&D. I hope you feel better. Let me know if you need anything.
  • Sounds like you are dehydrated which is bringing on braxton hicks contractions. I used to get them all the time, and would get them more often if I didn't drink enough water that day or was stressed out.
My doc always told me to lay on my side and drink tons of water.

    Hope everything is okay!
  • I would try the drinking water and laying on your left side before calling.  They will probably tell you to try that first anyways.  I had to go to the ER around 15 wks because I had a stomach bug and was throwing up so bad and so dehydrated.  I felt a ton better once they gave me some antinausea meds and fluids.  Hope you feel better soon.
  • Call your OB's after hours #.  I'm sure they have someone on call.  If you can't get ahold of them I'd go straight to the ER/L&D.  Just to make sure baby is ok.  ::hugs::  I sure hope you start feeling better!  Keep us updated, ok.

  • It sounds like you are dehydrated and that's what's bringing on the BH.  You should drink a big glass of water and lie down for a bit.  You could also call your OB's after hour line to see what they recommend.  If the contractions don't get better, they'll probably have you go in for monitoring and iv fluids to help with the dehydration.  Hope you feel better soon!
  • There is NO DIFFERENCE between Braxton Hicks and contractions, other than that contractions dilate your cervix.  They feel exactly the same, and you have no way of knowing which is which.

If you have the flu, you are very likely dehydrated, which causes contractions.  Lay down on your left side, and drink a liter of water.  If you are still having contractions 15-20 minutes after finishing the water, call your OB (or the after-hours answering service) right away and tell him/her you are on your way to triage at labor and delivery for contractions.  There are medications they can give you to stop the contractions if that's indeed what's going on.  And if you're dehydrated enough, they'll also give you an IV.

    Good luck!

  • I would call your OB.  You might be able to go to L&D instead of the emergency room, if they want you to come in.

I had a bad stomach flu around Christmas time, when I was about 35 weeks along with #2.  I called my OB and they instructed me to try to keep some fluids down, which I was able to do and then the BH's stopped.  If they didn't stop and I couldn't keep fluids down, they were going to have me go to L&D for an IV and to be monitored.

  • oh no alli, call your ob.  it sounds like you're dehydrated, so really try to take some fluids in.  do you have any pedialyte?  ugh, i'm sorry!
