Did your newborn wear hats?

I'm talking about crochet or cotton type hats to keep their heads warm. I've got a ton of sunhats but only a couple of the cotton ones. How many should I get for a mid-April baby?
I'm trying to decide how which ones and how many to buy on etsy :-)

Re: Did your newborn wear hats?

  • No but I think that is because she had a ton of hair to cover her little head.  She wore one home from the hospital but I think that was it.

  • My grandma and I knit a ton of hats for DD especially when she was little. I put them on her quite a bit the first few weeks and then only when we went outside after that.  My DD is an early January baby though.  I wouldn't think you would need that many for a mid-April baby.  I would save your money and buy more for next winter.

  • Olivia wore quite a few different knit hats in Sept-Oct.  I don't think she ever wore the little cotton ones that come with sleeper gowns.
  • DS wore them, but he was a late Sept baby, so he needed them.  He even wore them to sleep on cold nights.  Then his head got too big so we quit.
  • It wouldn't hurt to have a few on hand for chilly nights/days or if the A/C is running, but other than that i wouldn't expect to need any until fall/winter.
  • Always, pretty much 24/7 for the first few months of their lives. My midwife made a big deal about them needing to have a hat at all times to help them regulate body temps as a newborn (I had fall/winter babies, FWIW and they were both pretty small babies so they probably did need help staying warm.) I guess I took that one bit of advice to heart because I have a hard time not being judgmental when I see a newborn without a hat. It's almost scandalous, LOL.
  • He did in the NICU but once he came home, only for pictures :-)
  • She did in the hospital the entire time. The nurses told me that she needed a hat to help regulate her temp. Since she was born in Dec and it's a little cooler in our house, she wore one for the first couple of weeks all the time.

  • Both of my DS's did.  Maybe not DS #1 so much since he was born in July - but as it got into fall, he wore them.  Our house gets cold and drafty (129 year old farmhouse), so they're a must in the winter.

  • We only used them in the hospital, and when my mom was here.  It was pretty warm still at the end of Sept when  she was born.
  • Yes, but we have a January baby. We also have a 1949 house so it's chilly in here.

She wore a hat most days for the first 3-4 weeks and to bed every night for the first 6. I have started laying off the bedtime hat in the last few days. When we leave the house she most definitely still wears a cute knit or crocheted Etsy hat (hey, it's cold out there!).

  • Nope, but Ella was born in June.

I'd think with an April baby, you might want them for a few weeks maybe at home or if you go out, but not much past that.
