XP: Thoughts on nannycams...

Today was our nanny's 1st day (she started 1/2 day today) and so far so good. She seems genuine and sweet. She's happy to be employed, even if only 2 days a week right now. When I go back to work in mid-June, she will be watching DD and DS 4 days a week, 10 hour days. DH want's a nannycam installed. Anyone know anything about these? Cost? Legality? Do we have to tell her about it (by law)? I don't want to get us in trouble. I was thinking maybe she'd be better off knowing we're watching, just in case. Anyhow, your thoughts are appreciated. TIA!

Re: XP: Thoughts on nannycams...

  • I went to some city mom's event and the speaker said her thought on the nanny cam is that you should tell the nanny that you're going to do it.  I agree.  I personally would feel like it was an invasion of my privacy if I wasn't told. GL.

  • I have a nanny and a web cam- it's not obscured at all and she has always known it existed and it's purpose.  I'm not sure about the legality of a nanny cam and not telling the nanny about it- I told nannies that we'd use some form of monitoring when I interviewed them, just to see their reactions and if anyone objected to it, they were off our list.  I love the web cam- I get to see what my little man is up to when I'm working and he waves and blows kisses at the camera and, especially in the beginning, it made me feel very good about our nanny.
  • I was curious so I did some hunting and this is what I found

Is It Legal To Use A Hidden Camera?

It is indeed legal in all 50 states to use a hidden camera. However, it is illegal to record speech without a person's consent in the following 15 states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennyslvania, and Washington.

good to know. I work at a DC and we have cameras (only for owner and director) and I wondered about sound. I was never told about the cameras by the owner or director, rather a co-worker.....

  • i have never used them but my bro and sil used them for a nanny they had with my niece.  they never told her, nanny cammed her a few days and felt fine with it, made them feel better.

if it is legal i would not tell the nanny.  that is the whole point, you want to know how she is with dc's without being watched.  if she knows she is being watched or filmed she may or may not be true to form.

  • We used nanny cam and that's how we actually ended up firing our nanny. We are required to tell them that their moves could be monitored so that's what we did. We did not give her the specifics and Boy! so glad we did that. She was mishandling DS on many occassions and this led to us firing her.

I spoke with ADP about their cameras and I believe if you have a sticker on your window or door saying this premisis is monitored or something, it is enough. But you may want to make sure.
