Infant daycare rates?

Hi there! I'm new to this board, and pregnant with our first LO. I am currently laid-off and am trying to decide whether or not the best financial decision for our family will be for me to SAH (possibly working very part-time), or try to find a FT job after I have LO and put her in daycare.

I'm interested in how much FT infant childcare costs. I've found some rates for large centers, but I am also interested in in-home rates. I live in West Seattle and would probably work downtown so I am particularly interested in centers in between these areas, but would love to also hear about rates outside of the city. Thanks, ladies!!

Re: Infant daycare rates?

  • For DT, plan on about $1800/mo. We paid $1200/mo for the infant room in a 15 mile out suburb. I have no idea about home care. I prefer a center.

  • We use an in-home daycare that is ran by a husband and wife team.  It's at their house, but the preschool/daycare is not a part of their house, it's on the lower level of a slpit level with it's own entrance.  Infant thru age 2.5 is $45 a day.

We are in Lake Stevens, 30 minutes north of Seattle.

Thanks! I'm thinking downtown will probably be too expensive for us. Tongue Tied

  • We looked at Kindercare in Maple Valley and it was going to be 1400 a month!   So I just changed jobs to avoid that extra cost..

Welcome to the board and congrats!!

  • Also, not to panic you, but we got on the wait list for daycare when I was about 12 weeks pregnant and we still go the last spot available for 3 months after we were due!!    Places fill up fast, especially in the infant room I would schedule some walkthroughs sooner rather than later =)

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm kind of in limbo right now as I'm laid-off and am not sure when I will find a job, or if it makes financial sense for me to SAH for awhile. We wouldn't be able to afford daycare if we got a spot prior to me becoming employed. No harm in scheduling some walkthroughs and checking on wait-lists, though!

Yeah it wouldnt hurt to even get on some waitlists, they're mostly non contractual so we had spots at daycares saved for us just in case but then ended up not needing them so I just called and canceled.

  • It is pricing between $1075-$1500 a month in my search for infant daycare.

If I was in West Seattle, there is this daycare.

But since I am in Queen Anne, I am looking at this Dandelion daycare now in Magnolia.

  • In home prices vary a LOT!   I started out paying $750 (which is ridiculously low...and I found out that you pay for what you get!)  I now pay $1100...oh and this is up in Lynnwood.  I found both providers on Craigslist.

  • We're in NE Seattle and we looked at everything Downtown and North to the city line.  Within that area, in-homes seem to vary between $850-$1300. Centers are anywhere from $1350-$1900, with most being around $1550. Also, infant spots at centers are extremely difficult to get without going on a waitlist.  I agree with PP, who said you get what you pay for.  We love our center but the cost for two kids is ri-donkulous.

  • For full time care we pay 380 a week at an in home daycare. We love it! Granted that's for 2 munchkins. So 190 a week each which I think is a little lower than when they were under a year. We also did pt care 3 days a week at that point and it was 45 per day per child. We need 4 days a week. Paying for a full week was 20 bucks more total than 4 days do we did that and I try to only work 4 days and have a day home with them. We are in Renton.

  • You will find Westside care more expensive (in general) than Eastside. Of course there are some posh Eastside places, but overall...and wait lists are much longer too.

We have been on the wait-list at Providence Mt St Vincent since I was 3 months pregnant - so that's a long-shot. They do come highly recommended and are NYEAC certified - and are the MOST convenient location-wise for us but...I hear the list is closed now.

I've also heard excellent things about "Growing Years" on Marginal Way (in the Federal Bldg). My friend LOVES this place for her son. Next up on the "more affordable" list for is "Ages in Stages" (near Westcrest) as well as the REWA Beacon Hill Daycare - which my other friends seem to love as well.

We decided on Eastside near work and found a good spot for June - but for now DS is with a friend and grandparents - so maybe ask around. Do you have any SAHM friends who need some income to stay that way?
