Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Is this self-soothing?

Baby cries for like 30 seconds before I walk over to him. By the time I get to him he's stopped and has his thumb in his mouth, sucking away happily.

Self-soothing? I think so... but just wandering what you all think.

Re: Is this self-soothing?

  • yep. DS does this. By the time I get to his crib he is sucking his hand. Sometimes if his Wubbanub is in reach he will suck on the duck too.

  • sounds like it to me
  • Yes and I'm jealous!!  Lanie is trying soooo hard these days to get her thumb and she just can't get it yet!  I know I will hate the thumb later but would love for her to get it.  She will take the paci but spits it out more than not.
  • I just noticed Jack starting to do this last night, and my husband noticed it today.  Last night as I was scrambling to get a bottle for him suddenly I heard him making these sucking sounds and I found him nomming on his little fist.

  • yes, it's self soothing, because an action he himself has taken has soothed him, but at this point it might just be a happy accident, kwim?  He may or may not associate upset = I need to suck my thumb to relax.  He might have just had his thumb handy.  Does that make sense?

So, when people talk about the "ability to self soothe" with regards to sleep training - it's about 4-6 months before they figure out that there's an association between how they feel and how to fix it and do things like that deliberately and purposefully.
