Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Pedi suggested we let LO CIO

LO is very big for his age (almost 15 lbs and in the 95%tile), but he still wakes pretty often to eat. Our pedi suggested sleep training, including letting him CIO at night for 20-25 min. He said crying won't hurt him, no matter how long.

DH is on board because he keeps him weeknights (he's a SAHD). I keep LO on weekend nights. But, I know whatever we do, we need to do it consistently.

I'm worried that if we lay LO down to cry, that he may become wet, and we'll just let him lay there and not check because that's what we're "supposed" to do.

What do you all think?

I had planned on letting LO soothe himself to sleep, but not at 2.5 mos. I'm worried about trust issues.

  • I think your pedi is a moron - babies under 4 months are unable to self-soothe. And, 4 months is still very young.
  • 2.5 mos is way too young for CIO.  Babies this young cannot self soothe.  STTN has nothing to do with weight.  I'd get a new pedi.

  • Indifferent

OMG.  please, please PLEASE do not let your LO cry it out...especially at its young age.

and, like the previous poster suggested...GET A NEW PEDI.

  • I think 2 months is way too young to let a baby CIO.  If we tried that it would end up with both me and DS CIO.
  • Also, how exactly are you planning on doing CIO if you cosleep?

  • lol @ PP. 2.5 months is a bit early for CIO to me. but if you do go for it, just change LO before you lay him down so that you won't think its a dirty diaper he's crying about. but i think your pedi is a lil coldhearted.

Agreed! My pedi says they are too young to CIO at this age, they don't understand anything and are looking for something, weather its comfort, food or to be changed.  I would definitely get a new pedi!

agree.... We didnt let LO CIO until he was 9 months and I was still iffy about it. 2.5 months is way to young.

  • get a new pedi! this is ridiculous! you do NOT let your baby cio! not at 2 1/2 months. SERIOUSLY. when they are that young they are crying for a reason. whether its to eat or just be held. They say you shouldnt let them cio till 4-6 months. i still think 4 months is to young and I personally would say around 6-8 months.

    This.

In no way shape or form are you supposed to CIO with a baby that young, ever.

  • I've been wondering the same thing b.c Lanie is a big baby but just can't bring myself to do it (ped did not suggest it).... If she is still waking up in the middle of the night at 4 months I will do it.  Before then I will have to deal with it.
  • Your pedi is a moron.  You can't sleep train a baby until at least 4 months.

If you do ever decide to use the CIO method, read up on it first.  There is a right way to do it.  CIO does not mean never check on your baby!!!!!!

  • Poor baby.  I hope you don't let him CIO.  He's waking because he's hungry.  FEED HIM, get a new Pedi.  Pedi's aren't God, they don't speak the good word so you need to do what you feel as a mother is right and CIO at this age isn't right.  He's too young to soothe himself.  Hell, he's only been on this earth for 2.5 months he is so confused and the only thing he knows is mommy makes him feel all better.  Go feed and snuzzle your baby.  I still rock mine to sleep at night and don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

  • Please do not do CIO. Your LO is way too young to be able to self-soothe. If your baby is crying it is for a reason, they do not do it to manipulate. Crying is their only form of communication. Your LO is still very new to this world and needs to trust that you will respond to his needs. CIO at this age doesn't teach LO to self-soothe, it teaches him that you do not respond to his needs.

    For goodness sakes, REALLY????

My LOs are still getting up in the middle of the night at 9 MONTHS!!!  You're going to have to "deal with it" at whatever age they decide to do it.  Some babies are not goot sleepers.

FYI-Baby size has nothing to do with sleeping.

  • I wouldn't let him cry it out at that age.

That said, I would let LO fuss a bit when he/she wakes in the night. For example, my LO wakes at night, and she'll grunt around and make little noises. If I give her her paci, or turn on the seahorse, she'll fall right back asleep.

So, I might try not immediately feeding your LO every time they wake up in the middle of the night, but I wouldn't let them cry it out.

    Agreed!

  • #1.  Get  a new pedi. or ignore his advice.

#2.  STTN the night has absolutely NOTHING to do with weight.

#3.  Your baby is waking at night to eat, because he is hungry - feed him and try not to stress about your own lack of sleep.

  • I agree with other people...find a new pedi.

Ours said to let our LO cry for MAYBE five minutes...but if they're crying because they're hungry, ignoring it isn't going to make it better or go away.

  • OMG, get a new pedi ASAP!!!
  • Please DO NOT listen to your Pedi...and get a new one ASAP!

CIO is not for every family...and should NOT be used on babies younger than 4 months (minimum).

  • This is why I don't take parenting advice from my pedi.  Please, don't let your sweet baby CIO.  It seems like your instincts are right - worried that he's too young and trust issues.  As a mother, I don't know how ANYONE could listen to their 2 month old cry and be okay with not doing anything about it.

Follow your gut, not your stupid pedi's "advice."

    THIS!

  • I swear by CIO but I would never, ever consider doing it with a baby that young.  Like the others said babies are not even developmentally able to self sooth until at the very least 4 months.  And some not until up to 6 months.

  • Brandy, LO is too young.  He cannot self soothe yet.  Hold your baby, comfort him don't let him CIO now.

Yeah. Mine, too. Please note ticker.

It makes me both giggle and want to cry for the new moms...giggle b/c it's so ridiculous to expect a 2.5 month old to STTN and cry b/c they seriously have NO idea what they could be in for....

  • CIO is AWESOME! When the baby is at least 4 months of age. We had our DD CIO ast 4.5 months of age and she was sleeping 12 hours straight after just 3 nights of crying for about 45-hour. We plan to have our DS CIO at 4-5 months of age too...for now we do let our 6 week old cry for up to 20 minutes at bedtime and naps...9 times out of 10 he self sooths himself and drifts off to sleep for hours....letting a baby under 4 months of age cry for up to 20 minutes will NOT hurt your child in any way shape or form. Read "On Becoming Babywise"...it is an awesome book about sleep training and other things.

Go with your gut.  You'll know when your LO is ready (if you choose to go that route) - until then, give your babe the reassurance and love that they need.

This makes me want to cry.  Pick up your damn baby.  He is not "self soothing" - he is giving up because his moronic parents are ignoring him.
