Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

No ear infections in EBF baby until whole milk at 1?

DS had zero ear infections.  Until I stopped EBF after 13 months.

At that time, we slowly started him on whole milk while depleting the frozen bm in our freezer.  Now we are going on our third set of double ear infections.  We recently switched him over to more soy milk (for other reasons)- but haven't seen any improvement in the ear infections.

Did anyone else have this happen with the introduction of whole milk?

  • DD self-weaned at sixteen months and then got her first ear infection - it was a nasty one, too. Her ear drum pretty much exploded and there was pus, wax and blood every where.

I hate that she stopped. She has started to get sick a lot more often.

  • ugh i hope this isnt the case
  • All of my DC's were formula fed.  DD#1 got ear infections all the time.  DS has never had one and DD#2 has never had one.  It might just be the season and a coincidence.  Hope your LO is feeling better soon!!
  • Same here,  once we stoped BF he has had 3 doube ear infections,  pink eye twice and croup.  It has not been a fun winter.

  • Wow, that is interesting.  I only EBF until DD was 7 months, then did formula.  She has been drinking whole milk since about 13 months old and she has never *knock on wood* gotten an ear infection.  When you feed your LO, do you still hold them in your arms or lay them down to drink?  I hear laying them down flat to drink can cause/increase risk of ear infections.
  • DS doesn't lay down to drink.  He rarely stops moving- I think he would prefer to eat most of his meals and all of his sippies while running around the house.

This is the same for my DD.

Hum, well then it is not from laying down!  I would be curious to see what your pedi says about it.  Maybe he drinks/sucks differently on the bottle with the milk?
  • My step sister EBF'd her 4 children until they were 1.  3 of her 4 children have tubes and they all had ear infections throughout their 1st year, before intro of whole milk.  Also, they all have asthma....go figure!

  • Ds has had many ear infections, some while ebf, some while on whole milk.  The doctor said that there's no connection between milk and ear infections unless there's an allergy.
  • i'd say it's a coincidence, ike was BF and then FF, then at 1 year we switched to whole milk and still no ear infection (knock on wood!)
  • I'm willing to bet it has to do with the shape/orientation of his ear parts right now. Maybe he had a growth spurt recently and his ears aren't draining well as a result?

DS was FF'd from day one and has only had 1 ear infection (part of a sinus infection) in 15 months.

  • We have an allergist appointment this week- I guess this is another question to ask!
  • DS started getting ear infections at 3mos, I BF until 8mos. DD was only BF for 4wks and had one ear infection when she was 4mos old.
