Need help with solids/finger foods (had a scare today)

My DD is 10 months old and has been having some finger foods lately.  She loves puffs and mum mums and has also had small pieces of toast, cheese, blueberries, and apple bits.  I decided today to bake a butternut squash and feed it to her in small pieces.  She started crying after eating some of it and she kept crying so I took her out of the high chair and when I picked her up she inhaled really deeply and started choking...she wasn't breathing for a second or two.  She finally started to crying again which was the biggest relief ever!!  I was scared to death!!  Anyone have any suggestions on things to try with her?  What foods do you give and what size do you give?  These pieces were pretty small so I'm not sure how she choked.  I'm so scared to continue with finger foods but I know that's what she needs and she is starting to refuse purees.  Thanks so much!!

  • Pedi said the size of a pea.  We haven't had any problems.  We also do not feed him fingers foods.  We put them on his tray and let him feed himself.

  • Honestly, despite the fact that we're a wee bit food snobbish in our house, we let Asher take little nibbles of Cheese Doodles (you know the bright orange Cheese Puffs you get on the potato chip aisle?) for practice. They dissolve really quickly, helped him develop his grasp and allow him to practice chewing.

Its not easy, and in the beginning he had a hardish time figuring out the timing of chewing/swallowing but the only way to really get it nailed down is by practice.

  • I agree with PP that it is better to let them feed themselves. It helps them regulate what they are eating and allow them to know what size food they can ingest.

Finn started BLW (baby led weaning) around 6.5 months and now eats everything on his own, with the exception of yogurt and applesauce. It is scary to see them cough and gag, but over time she will do this less.

  • I'm sorry I was unclear...she was feeding herself and she hadn't put any more in her mouth than usual so I'm not sure what happened.
  • In the CPR classes I have taken in the past they have always said a baby's airway is as small as their nostral so I'd go with about that sized food.

  • I try to give foods that he can grip and gnaw on.  Today DS had oven baked sweet potato fries and did great with them.

He also loves frozen peas that are thawed but still cold, especially since he is teething.  Gerber yogurt melts are another favorite.  He also has eaten grapes, watermelon, really ripe pear, banana, avocado, cheese, crackers, and puffs.  Everything is cut or broken into very small pieces.  The harder it is to dissolve or mash the smaller the piece.  For some of the more slippery food, such as banana, I sprinkle some dry baby oatmeal mix over it to give it more texture to grip.

  • Honestly it sounds more like she was just upset about something else. Had she been happy and eating like normal, the choking probably would never have happened. You can't do much more than you're already doing....a baby's airway is about the diameter of their pinky finger, so try to cut things about that small. Good luck!

Thank you!  That actually makes me feel a whole lot better about it.

  • My pedi said don't feed them things that are not soft (bananas, avacado, baked potatoes) or dissolve (like puffs/melts/cheerios). So basically avoid hard pieces of apple, carrot, (unless they're baked) nuts, etc.
