Parenting after a Loss

Might extend my maternity leave...opinions?

Hey girls,

So my maternity leave is up in 2 weeks.  I'm supposed to go back March 8 but I'm thinking of extending my leave until the beginning of April.  I'm a teacher so I will just get docked pay (we have DH's insurance) and we can afford it with really no lifestyle change.  I'm just worried that I'm denying the inevitable.  DD has been going to daycare for 3 1/2 years so it's not new to me.  I just want a little more time at home with my kiddos.  What do you all think?  Am I just prolonging it and possibly making going back worse if I extend my leave until April?  WWYD?  Sorry for such a long post...

  • I ended up extending my leave by 1 week and did not regret it. I actually felt ready to go back at that point. If I were you, I would extend the leave. You will never get this time back. Good luck with your decision.

  • if you can do it then take the extra time off. life is short and our babies are growing up so fast... I'd extend your leave.

Thanks Ellen!  I was just thinking about you the other night when I was thinking of when Camden might give up his dreamfeed.  Some nights he's just not that interested and other nights, he sucks down the whole bottle.  It looks like it may be a couple more weeks before I get brave and try a night without it.  One night I'll be brave and hopefully he will do as well as Sophia did for you!

  • If I could have extended my leave I totally would have done it.  If you have the option, go for it!  You will never regret spending the extra time with your LO's!

They are growing up so fast!  Look at your little Kate, she's getting so big!

This exactly! I would have probably come back to NO job considering I took more time than anyone in the company ever has. Granted, they have only had maybe 5 people go out on maternity leave ever! Our short-term only covers 6 weeks regardless of vaginal birth or C-section though. I took 12 and you would have thought I was gone for a year by the way they acted when I got back! :)

This exactly! I extended mine by 3 weeks mostly because she was in the nicu for 3 weeks and I don't regret it at all.  Granted, she'll be with me at work for a few months until she is cleared to go to daycare - we'll see at that point if she goes.

  • I extended too.  I was going to take 3 months, then 4, and then 5.  Our daycare did not open until she was 5 months old.  We could have had MIL come stay for a month....but I will be honest.  I am so HAPPY I took the extra time off.  Work will always be there for us.  we only get a few months and one chance with our LOs when they are babes.

You are so right!  Ok you all have helped me make the decision that I wanted to make anyway! Smile Thanks ladies!

  • I vote for extending since it sounds like you can.  The pros out weigh the cons!
