tips to keep toddler(s) busy while bf?

I still have help around so taking care of my twin boys have been pretty easy.  BUT, I'm worried about when the help goes home and I have to bf Tessa - I'm scared I'm just going to put on the TV the whole day.

  • Don't worry, they will understand you have to feed the baby. You can try coming up with a special activity for them to do while you BF or maybe even a special snack since baby is having a snack too.

I didn't really have a plan, at first DD wanted to sit by me to "share" the attention but eventually she got used to it. Occasionally she still gets a bit whiney but that only happens if she is overtired.

Anyway, don't stress out! you will make it work somehow :)

  • I use Katen's tag jr books and her little touch leap pad pretty often while I'm nursing. It keeps her engaged. Otherwise I have her doing a project at the table.

  • I'm worried about this too.  I plan on having lots of coloring books/books/etc. to keep my DS occupied.

  • I didnt BF, but things I did/do while feeding #2:

Pulled out the crayons and coloring book

Got a snack in the snack trap and a sippy with milk

Got a couple new toys and pulled those out when I was going to feed. Toys he hasnt seen before keep him occupied for longer.

Sometimes I did put on the TV (Those first couple of months he watch more tv than I wanted him to, but DS2 demanded a lot of attention)

  • I have the opposite of you - I have twin babies & an older DD.

She was 20 months when the boys were born and I worried the same way you did about the tv being on.

It also seemed that as soon I would BF the twins she was on me and wanted to play or cuddle.

I used flash cards.  It was something she like to do and it didn't really bother the boys while they were eating.

I would also put the TV on, but a movie because the shows on Nick Jr are about 20 minutes and she would wonder when the show ended.

We watched a lot of Wallie, Kung Fu Panda etc....  At least the first 30-40 minutes!

  • It's natural to worry about losing your help.  I paniced before my husband went back to work, too.  You'll figure out a routine that works, though.  As a MoM, I'm sure you're used to multi-tasking :)  I'm not sure if anyone else does this, but when my twins were tiny, and I felt like I was feeding them all.day.long, I would walk around with them while I was nursing.  I would hold them in one arm, and I would be able to do things with my older kids, even helping them on the potty, etc.  It sounds crazy, but I did it a lot! :)  I agree about having new/novel toys around, maybe in a special basket that only comes out when you're nursing.  Also, I always tried to fit nursing sessions in around naptimes, so I was guaranteed at least one feeding in peace while the older kids were asleep.  Don't worry too much about the TV either.  Do what you have to do to get through these first couple of months.  Good luck!!
