What do I really need for baby?

Okay ladies, tell me what are the "must haves" for you!  I'm 29 weeks and not quite in a panic yet, but I feel like I should be more productive with the time I have left while I still have energy and a moderate-sized belly.  We've decided on a stroller and that's about it!  Any suggestions for the things we need to get pre-baby would be appreciated!  Like how many onesies and how many pairs of socks??  That kind of stuff stumps me...I read different opinions on all the check-lists out there and I need to know what works!  Thanks in advance!

Re: What do I really need for baby?

  • I'm following about 3 checklists!  Here's one: https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/news/new-baby-basics-1105/overview/index.htm

This is my first baby, so I don't know if I'm getting enough.  And the sizes vary sooo much from brand to brand.  Some newborn clothes are tiny and some look big to me.  I think I'll need more onesies than the checklists call for, so I'll probably pick up another package.  I'm only 20 weeks, but I'm a perfectionist and can't wait til the last minute to do things.  I am saving all receipts though.  I only got one package of socks but will likely get another pair of all white.  I got all the basics in newborn size.  I got some outfits in newborn and the rest I will get bigger.

  • I just stopped in looking for this exact thing! Thanks!

  • In the beginning, DS lived in onesies and was swaddled.  I liked having at least 2 onesies per day in case of spit up and so forth.  So maybe a dozen in size newborn.

I loved our boppy from the beginning for nursing and just letting ds sleep on it.  Make sure you have your carseat picked out and know how to use it correctly.

  • -Side Snap T-Shirts in Newborn and 0-3 sizes. IMO, onesies aren't great for the first couple of weeks for 2 reasons -

    1. it's hard/scary to put a t-shirt over their very delicate head

    2. the umbilical cord site is a little delicate too, so the side snap t-shirts allow it to breath

-Definitely some Newborn size clothes. DS was swimming is all the 0-3 stuff, it was huge and I've read a million posts on here that people with all different size babies use the Newborn size for at least a couple of weeks, sometimes longer

-Get a Boppy pillow. They are great for tons of different things (breastfeeding, bottle feeding, propping up baby, tummy time later on, etc.)

-For a stroller, I would recommend just getting a carseat and the Graco stroller frame. When they are really little, it's nice to cradle them in a carseat. That's what worked for us, anyway.

-Plenty of receiving blankets or swaddle blankets. I used receiving blankets in the beginning for swaddling, then we progressed to the Halo Sleepsacks but I kind of wish I had known about the Halo Sleepsacks from the beginning because they are SO much easier than trying to swaddle yourself. I hated the Miracle Blanket, too difficult to get a wiggly baby all wrapped up. Having said that, I have a friend who loves it... a lot of it is trial and error.

Things I didn't get and don't regret not getting - wipes warmer, sterilizer, diaper genie. We didn't get a swing, we just got a vibrating rocker seat. I later got a small swing, but sort of wish we had just gotten a full size swing from the beginning.

    This is excellent information!!

  • funny because it really just depends on the baby.  I have had two and I really can't answer this post with much confidence. Most of the stuff that worked with DS1 don't work with DS2 and vice versa.  I think it is best to have alot of different things and see how your little one responds.  Which is why getting suff used is best.

For instance, both babies were 6 pounders at birth. DS1 was in newborn and 0-3 for MONTHS and DS2 outgrew it in a week.  Crazy.  I personally hate those side button shirts and prefer the onsies (just looser fitting).  Found the diaper bins to be a waste and just use doggie bags to dispose of babies diapers in our regular trashcan. Used the bouncer and the swing ALOT with DS1, DS2 not a fan.  He actually loves to sleep in his bassinett. DS1 only wanted AVENT bottles, DS2 hates those and prefers the medella bottles and orthodonic nipples.

Don't even really use a stroller this time because DS2 loves to be carried (Moby wrap) everywhere, but DS1 loved to sleep in infant car seat so we used that and a stroller frame.

All I am saying is there is no one right answer and the answer is constantly changing.  so my best advice is to get as much stuff as you can for free or at a discount because you just don't know what little one will prefer and it gets so expensive buying everything new.

This expect I would want wipes too.  Really that is all you need everything else is just extra stuff that might make life easier.

This exactly. The rest are just nice-to-haves (or marketing gimmicks, haha). You really need very little to bring home a baby. I felt overloaded with STUFF that we didn't really need (though thought we would) and will totally minimize the extras this time around.
