A work with someone who's husband just went and bought a brand new Mercedes without consulting her at all.

Pissed is not the word.

  • Holy Mother-F I would kill him.

  • Oh. EM. Gee.

Divorce would be the word. My Dh and i have had this convo. A wife of a guy he works with did this exact thing. They are getting divorced now. (she was also cheating on him)

  • Oh. Hell. No.

Luckily, I don't have a problem with decision making in my house.  We make decisions together.  Even down to going out to dinner with a friend--neither of us decides for the other person without consulting them first.

  • If it was something we could afford, I would kind of be like whatever.

Of course we couldn't afford a Mercedes so that would not be the case in this situation at all. Which I'm assuming was the point of the post, not the decision making part.

  • Whoa. I like to think my husband would never do something like this, but I guess it could happen. I don't know if I'd divorce him, but at the very least he'd have to pay for this with only money he'd earned...

  • Can they afford it?  That would make a huge difference in how pissed I would be (I'd be pissed either way, of course).

  • WHAT?! I'd be in jail, for sure.
  • Was it a present? Can they afford?

    No?

    Then he'd be dead.

  • Wow, someone would have to tie me up for DH's safety.

  • Yes, they can afford it.  It was a decent deal and he had a excellent trade.  She doesn't have a big problem with the car, the fact that it was not discussed before he did it.

If we were rich and could pay cash and it was a surprise, like for Xmas or a birthday I wouldn't be mad.

But, any other situation I would be upset.

ETA: When I say "rich" I am talking Diddy style. Like we are not worried about money at all.

This would be my problem. DH sees money in the account and sees "we can afford a lot of things" but the problem is I PAY THE BILLS. I know when the property taxes are due, and when maintenance items are scheduled etc. So what we can afford in his head and what we can actually afford are different things. so for him to make any kind of major purchase (even if it were a computer) without talking to me in anyway first, would be grounds for dismissal.

When you have joint accounts, and you are putting your family and home first above your own individual desires which is what marriage is all about, there is no reason to make any kind of decision or purchase without talking to your spouse. End of story. We buy NOTHING without discussing first if its over 50 bucks.

  • My ex husband would have done this no question.  We talked briefly about buying a certain car for me in a year or so.  He woke me up the next morning and annoucned that he bought one and we needed to go pick it up.

  • I guess I really am alone here haha. As long as it wasn't more than we are spending on his car now, I wouldn't really care.

Not alone. Especially if it was his car he was trading in. If it was a "family" car, discussion needed. If it cost more money- discussion needed.
