Everyone has said the Medela to me. I posted a question on the breastfeeding board a few days ago and they told me that unless I am going to be pumping more than 1x per day I did not need to spend that much money on one.
If you will be pumping several times they all said to spend the extra b/c it will be so much easier!
Are you planning to exclusively pump? Is there any reason you can't breastfeed? I'm asking because I had to EP, and it is TOUGH. It's all the work of formula and bfing combined. I just want to encourage you to try BFing if there's any way possible.
Also, I have the Ameda pump and it worked great for me. I EP'd for 6 months with it and never had any trouble. It's cheaper than the medela, but I've heard great things about that pump as well.
What is considered the "best" pump? Probably the Medela, but also the most expensive. I got the Lanisoh double electric, which was much cheaper, and was really happy with it. I pumped enough to have 500oz stored before returning to work at 3 1/2 months and then pumped 2-3times a day until he was 7 months old. It held up great and I plan to use it with #2 also.

Medela is by far the most popular brand. I have one and was very happy with it, although I have nothing to compare it to.

What kind of pump are you looking for? Electric? Manual?
I don't plan on pumping (at least, not in the beginning) but I bought a Lansinoh manual pump for relieving engorgement. It got good reviews.
I don't know much about the electric pumps, but I've heard that Medela pumps are pretty nice.
