Daycare for twins ?s

I'll be (probably) going back to work as a teacher next September when my twins will be 10 months old.  I say probably because I already hate the idea of leaving them and it feels really wrong to me. I have cried about it several times already but DH insists we need the $$ and I know he is probably right.

I'm not on any waitlists yet and I live in an area where the waitlists are notoriously long.  Was it hard for you to find a daycare for your twins where they wouldn't be separated?  I am adamant that they will not be separated - if I can't be with them at least they will be with each other.

I also am really considering a nanny who would come to my home and stay with them while I'm at work.  What do you call this kind of person (part-time nanny?  au pair?  I'm not familiar with the lingo) and do you know of or recommend any agencies to find one?

Re: Daycare for twins ?s

  • we have a nanny come to the house while i work part time.  we went through nannies4hire.com, and interviewed several people.  this site is much less expensive than an agency that can charge $1500 for placement.

nanny wage for 2 babies is pretty standard at $15-20/hr.  but that can depend on where you live.  san diego is expensive.  so, of course day care is probably more expensive in expensive areas.  but i've never priced it out to see the difference.

hope you feel good about whatever you decide :)

  • Thank you!!!  This is exactly what I needed to hear.  I will check out the website you used, now I feel like I have a place to start!  :)
  • we found our nanny through care.com. We have 3 little ones. No way we could afford daycare. Not sure how we can afford the nanny but it's still cheaper and i have to work. Money stinks!

  • not sure what your area is like- but here in NJ you need to find one soon... I started looking in Dec for a sept start for my singleton... and put the deposit down in Feb.  You need to find somewhere SOON esp b/c you have 2.

keep in mind the cost- not sure what you make teaching (I used to teach and know it's not much) but it might be more money smart to SAH with them... do the math and see what works for your family.

No advice on nannies- i'm not a fan... i have trust issues and like daycare for the school atmosphere and interaction they get.

Agreed.  We use an in-home day care now.  DD was at a center, but the cost is simply too much for 3.

I live in MD, and started looking as soon as we found out it was twins.  MD licensing only allows providers to have 2 kids under 2.  As I needed both of those spots, it was a pretty tough search.

  • We ended up going with a nanny.  We are paying slightly more for the nanny than for daycare.  I am really happy with our decision.  The nanny is great with them and I don't have to worry about getting them up and ready to get out of the house with me in the morning.

We are going to put them in daycare after they turn 1 so they can have more socialization.  Our waitlists are long as well for daycare so I am signing up now.

  • We got on a wait list for our work-associated daycare when I was 8 weeks pg (we knew it was twins).  We would have had spots, but they only let kids in in June and I had to go back to work at the end of March so if we went with that center, we'd have to find some sort of arrangement for a couple months so why not look for a permanent arrangement instead.  We were going to go with a nanny, but we interviewed some people and it was going to be hard to find someone we trusted in our house with our DDs while we were gone.  We got unbelievably lucky that I called a center near my office that our friends had their kids at and they said they had two open infant spots (out of a total of 9).  I talked to them on a Friday, we toured on Monday, and decided it was a perfect place for them.  They've been there almost a year and we all love it!

  • Au pairs are surprisingly affordable, usually much less than daycare, especially if you have more than one child, since you pay a flat rate no matter how many little ones you have.  Email me if you want more info. about it and I'll give you a referral too, jfaye78 at hotmail.

Agreed.  I make a pretty decent living, but with the cost of day care in our area (especially for two), I woudn't be bringing home THAT much more money.  We did the math, and it looks like I'll be staying home with them.  I'm really excited about it and the extra amount of money we'd have per month or week if I worked wasn't really worth it.

  • Daycare for 3 would cost us $50K a year.  So, we'll be looking into the nanny route as well.  The other factor is that DD1 was sick by the 3rd day in daycare at 3 mos old...got ear infections once a month and ear tubes by 8 mos old.  So, I think it may be better to keep the twins out of daycare for awhile.  However, I still want DD1 to be in preschool at least 3 days a week.
  • I have a nanny for my son and I'm a huge fan.  It's been a dream for us and so good for my son.

I have a part-time nanny b/c I just work 3 days but I'll bump her up to full-time when the twins get here so I have another set of hands to help me with all three.  I would not do an au pair- they live with you, are generally young and inexperienced and are committed for a year or two and then gone.  I wanted someone with a ton of experience who would be with our family until the LOs are in school.  I found my nanny through an agency- it's pricier but I didn't have time to wade through the million people who applied to my Craigslist ad, most of whom didn't even qualify for the basics I'd laid out in my ad.  The agency background checked my nanny and I spoke with her 2 references.

  • We have a (live-out) nanny for our twin girls.  She works 36 hours a week (4 days) while I work outside of the home.  I found her through the website care.com and it has started out great so far.  She is 32 (I did not want anyone in their early 20s) and has experience with both being a nanny and working in a day care center.  I get daily written updates on the girls: when the ate, napped, diapers, activities, mood, and general info on what we need in the house, etc...

As long as things go this well, we will probably have her until the girls are about 3 and then think about daycare for the interaction with other children and other experiences.

    Good Luck in your search.
