Question about your bump "showing"

So I've only really been showing for about a week now (currently almost 20 weeks) and I just recently went through all my clothes and packed away whatever is no longer an option. One thing I'm noticing, and it may just be because I'm only recently showing, is that I'm not sure how comfortable I am showing in more form-fitting clothing. I know the days of hiding pregnancy are over but I just can't decide if I like my stomach being all out there. I do generally think the more fitted stuff looks so cute on others. I was thin pre-pregnancy so it wasn't an issue before, only now. Obviously it's a personal thing, different for everyone, but I am wondering if it is just because I'm not used to it yet and may become more comfortable with time. Did anyone else go through this and change their mind (or not)?

Re: Question about your bump "showing"

  • Yes. DH asked me why are you hiding your belly? So I guess he likes it when I have more form-fitting shirts so people know I'm definitely pregnant. I like the ruched-side tops now. :-) I think I like them moreso now because others can tell I am pregnant and not sporting a beer belly.

  • I didn't like showing my bump when it still looked like fat around the middle.  Once my bump got more defined, I started really liking form fitting clothes.  That way I look pregnant, not fat.  I don't even like the loose flowy shirts right now, because they don't show my bump enough!

  • I dislike the flowy stuff.  I have hips to begin with, so even though I haven't gained anything yet, flowy stuff makes me look like I'm fat, even though my belly is pretty obviously a pregnant belly.  I'm far more comfortable (body image wise) in the more form fitting stuff.  I keep the flowy stuff for when I'm at home.

    This!

  • The only thing I was worried about was buying a nice padded bra to hide the nipple area and make sure my shirts are long enough so I don't show actual midriff/belly skin. You can use cardigans to layer on top of form-fitting shirt or light jackets. I think showing the bump is cute!
  • I wore baggy stuff when I was hiding the pregnancy at work before I told my boss.  Ever since I prefer the more fitted clothing.  I think the bigger stuff just makes me look bigger overall.

  • I don't like being The Pregnant Lady, and generally I wear looser fitting clothing that minimizes rather than accents the look of the bump.  I was the same way w/DD.  I don't care what other people wear, I just personally find when I wear something more form fitting I feel like I have to give an "I'm up here!!" comment to get the attention off the belly.

  • Like pp once my bump got more defined and didn't look like a beer belly, I like showing it off. I actually don't like the flowy or non-fitted shirts...they make me feel fat.

  • I didn't feel comfortable showing until about 21 weeks and wearing more form fitting clothes because I too just felt "fat" and wondered if people would know if I was pregnant.  When I didn't wear the form fitting clothes, people were shocked when I told them I was pregnant.  I now love showing off the bump when I can.  Don't worry so much and do what's comfortable for you!
  • I like rouched tops, and have gotten alot of "when is your baby due?" comments from strangers, so I LOVE THAT. :)

And with my new maternity jeans, I feel pretty cute. Good jeans totally make you feel better about being pregnant... lol

  • I actually like the form-fitting tops better.  I feel like since I'm pretty short and curvy, I don't want to add flowy material and make myself look more like a tent.  The rouched side shirts are my favorites.

  • Like others said.. I like wearing somewhat fitted shirts too b/c then it's very clear that I'm pregnant. If I wear a sweatshirt it completely hides it at this point.. which is ok too.. I just hate the shirts that show there is something there.. but not clearly that it's a baby!  Although anyone who knew me pre-preg probably wouldn't think I got fat.. it's just strangers.. which I know.. why should I care what they think anyway, right?
  • I wear a zip up hoodie everyday if I were to take it off it's obvious, but still looks a little beer gutish to me.  Once the sweatshirts can't hide it anymore I'm going to wear the more fitting tops because I think the flowy ones make me look excessively chunky.
  • I would rather wear something more form fitting and look pregnant than wear something baggy and just look fat. I already feel fat enough. People might as well know that I'm really pg. What sucks now are the, "any day now" type comments. Umm... yeah. I have 4.5 months left.

  • Right now I'm still in regular tops so I kind of look like I have a beer belly. I'm okay with fitted tops at home and on the weekends, but at work I plan to wear looser tops. I work at a fairly conservative office so I don't want to show too much with wearing something super tight when I'm further along. Especially since I never before wore super tight shirts to work. I think it really depends on your personal preference and where you're going.
  • Now that I am not just chunky, I love showing off the belly as much as possible.  I worked hard for this bellyStick out tongue I am not ashamed.

  • I'm wearing the same stuff I normally wear.  I don't have any shirts that could really "hide" my bump.  I wear a lot of sweaters and such.  It doesn't bother me at all.
  • I love rocking my bump in a snug fitted maternity tee. I like it much more than the flowy stuff I have.

This.  Flowy shirts make me feel frumpy!

  • I think form-fitting (but not super tight) is much more flattering.  I think big loose maternity tops look like circus tents.

  • It depends on the shirt. If I can do flowy and not look like I am just big, then I would rather do flowy.

Formfitting only if I look pregnant and not chubby.

I really was excited about when I would start to show and now that I am showing, I hvae mixed feelings. Hoping once it is a litle more obvious pregnant belly and not beer belly that I will love showing it off more!

Thankfully most of my group of friends are also pregnant, and I am behind all of them so they make me feel small :)

  • I am just starting to show and will be "out" to everyone at work next week, hopefully. Now with a small bump I do prefer more form-fitting. I'm bigger to begin with and if I wear big clothes it just looks like I'm fat.
