MoM with 3+ kids all in carseats

What car do you have?  With twins on the way and DD1 who will be 3yrs when they come...what car will work with three carseats?  Hoping to stay away from the minivan.

Re: MoM with 3+ kids all in carseats

  • well...I would go for the minivan even though I thought I'd never want one- now loving the thought of getting my Honda Odyssey soon! But if you really don't want that my In Laws have a ford expedition and it has a 3rd row seat and can fit 8 people. I think it's nice, just some of those big suv's are hard to get up into with little ones being so high to step up. GL:)

  • minivan.

when you have to put three kids into a car, you want the seats to be easy to access and low to the ground. plus, you're going to want lots of storage space.

  • We have a Ford Freestyle (which has since been transformed into the Ford Flex...which is the same on the inside but not on the outside).

It's got a similar set up on the inside as a minivan, 3 rows. The back has captains chairs (option to have a bench if you want, though I don't think a bench would work for getting to the back w/ car searts) and then the last row is a bench w/ 2 seats.

We got it b/c DH refused to get a minivan, so this was a compromise. but I think a minivan would be easier--the sliding door, lower down, etc. Even if the eat configuration is the same.

  • I HAVE A TRAILBLAZER AND I LOOOVE IT.. THEY MAKE THEM WITH A THIRD ROW!
  • we hvae a minivan and i can't tell you how great it is to have one - forget the space (which you will need) but the auto opening doors are a God send! I can't imagine dealing with opening car doors while carrying babies and all their crap.

Griffin is in the 3rd row, forward facing. The twins are in the middle row, rear facing... though, Gray is still in the infant seat for about 2 more pounds... and then I'm not sure what we'll do- b/c his conv seat rear facing sticks out forward far and would make my driver's seat have to go forward, which i just can't do... so i might have to put him in the 3rd row and then put him into his seat from the back door ... until he's forward facing- then move him back to the 2nd row.

  • I just got a honda odyssey and I love it!

  • We were able to stay away from the minivan until #3 came along.  We could have gotten three Radian car seats in the back seat of the Dodge Magnum but it would have been tight.  We broke down and bought the minivan and I LOVE IT!

There is plenty of room for everyone and I don't have to worry about kids fighting, taking things from each other, crowding each other, etc.  We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will have a minivan as long as everyone is in car seats.   We won't have to drive the minivan forever!

  • You'll want a minivan.  We have a GMC Envoy XL with 4 carseats and it's not easy to get all the kids in and out.  We actually had to move our 3 yo into a seatbelt booster so that we could remove his carseat every time we need to get out of the car so that we can get the infant seats out of the 3rd row.  We have our 1 yo in a convertible in the 2nd row and our 3 yo in the 2nd row.  Twins are in the 3rd row but there's also no LATCH system back there so we have to use the seatbelts in the locked position.

ETA:  I guess with 3 carseats you could go the 3rd SUV route and just have one of the 2nd row seats folded down.  If you plan to have any more children though, it would probably be best to go with a minivan now : )

  • Check out the Mazda 5.   It's got the perks of a minivan without feeling like a minivan.   We are going to put DD in her convertible in one of the 3rd row seats, and flip the other seat down for gear, and the twins in the 2 middle row seats.    It's smaller than a minivan, but we're going to get a storage bucket for the roof rack for trips where we need more room for stuff.
  • We have a suzuki XL7 currently, seats 7, a little lower like minivan but with doors and the back 2 rows of bench seats.

  • I agree - I think you might want to get over the distaste for minivans.

The automatic sliding doors are wonderful!

An SUV with a 3rd row seat would work, but a) how hard is it to access the 3rd row? and b) how much trunk space will that leave you?

    Go for the minivan.

  • I also have a toddler and twins and I really don't want to get a minivan, even though I'm sure it's the easiest option day to day.

We looked into SUVs with third row seating and we are also consider wider SUVs that would allow us to put all three carseats in one row.  I've heard that the Radian convertible carseats are the narrowest.  The Acura MDX is set up to fit 3 Latch carseats across.  I've also heard that the following SUVs fit 3 convertible carseats (I haven't tested them to see for sure):  Volvo, Honda Pilot, Range Rover.  I'm sure huge SUVs like Suburbans and Expeditions fit 3 and I'd also look into the crossover vehicles.

  • I have 4 year old twins and have another set of twins on the way... I drive a Toyota Sienna minivan and although I'm not in love with minivans themselves, I really love mine.  It'll be great when I go from 2 to 4 kids!  Plenty of room for everyone, as well as gear, etc.  My older twins will sit in the 3rd row seat and these new babies will be in the 2 captain's seats in the middle row.

  • There is no reason you HAVE to have a minivan. We have a Ford Expedition and it fits all three carseats across the middle row so I am able to leave the 3rd row down for cargo space. I much prefer to have all three children close by and not to have to climb into any vehicle to strap someone into a third row. My DD will be three when the twins are born also.
