Ours seem to be having meltdowns between 7-9pm each night. We were not taking them upstairs until it was time for us to go to bed (doc said they would be ready for a bedtime routine around 4 months) which was around 10 or so but they were having a really, really hard time settling.
Last night it took us 2 hours to get DD to sleep - she was beyond wound up. It just seems that between 7-9pm they force themselves to stay awake for hours and then they are a nightmare to put to bed.
I am wondering if we should just take them upstairs and get them in the pitch black and silence around 7pm when my 5 year old goes to bed. We do not really have a bedtime routine with them yet (story/song, bottle, sleep, etc.) since we thought they were still too young for that.
Thoughts?
Re: What time do your babies go to bed?
we started bedtime routine at 12wks (6wks adjusted), so depending on when yours were born, maybe they're ready! we had been struggling with nights and days that blended together, and a friend with a singleton a little older than ours said we were at the perfect time to do bedtime routine. we started that night!
also when we started bedtime routine... going to go look at my log... OK, they had their baths anywhere from 8-9pm, then bottle, then bed. within 10days they started sleeping 5hrs. then, at about 14wks, they seemed really hooked on bedtime routine, but wanted it earlier and earlier, and we settled on 7:15/7:30ish everynight for bathtime. then two weeks later bathtime was by 7pm... basically they kept moving it earlier as they would be overtired and wound up.
as soon as those first 1-2wks were through, and the girls seemed to count on that routine, they slept progressively better at night.
we went all the way down to 6:30bedtime, and just recently pushed it back to 7pm. as long as naps are decent 7pm to bed seems ok with them... although they always get a little edgy right at bedtime.
We've actually done a bed time routine for about the past 3 or 4 weeks, and it really works for us. They usually go down between 8 and 9 depending on their feeding schedule for the day, and will sleep for four hours after going down. Our routine is that they get a bottle, then a diaper change and into their onesie and sleep sack with the swaddle attachment. Then we put them into their cribs sleepy but awake and put their fisher price oceanarium on for them. I honestly think the thing that signals to them that its bedtime is putting them in their swaddle sacks. We only swaddle them at night and I think it really helps them sleep.
Hope this helps!
The babies go to bed around 10 o'clock sometimes earlier if I think they're getting tired, but hopefully sometime soon will try again- they usually wake up around 7 o'clock to nurse.
at that age they'd eat their 7pm bottle and usually fall asleep (downstairs with us) until their 10pm bottle, and then we'd put them to bed after that.
around 5mo we dropped the 10pm bottle and they started going to bed after the 7pm (around 7:30)
I was having the same issue at right around 4weeks we implemented a bedtime routine. I started off my putting them in bed by 8pm...and they naturally moved it up to 7:15pm or so....
It's SO much better! we avoid the meltdown and I have some quiet time before heading to bed!
