Confused about the 1 hour glucose test!

OK, so my Dr. said that fasting is not necessary, just to avoid foods high in sugar, but some Drs. do say to fast, so is it better to fast to increase the chance of passing?

Also, you go in and drink something and then you have to sit at the lab for an hour until you can get your blood drawn?  Do they give you the results right away?  For the 3 hour test, you have to sit at the lab for 3 hours??

  • I don't know why some doctors make you fast and others don't.  My doctor has you fast, you can't even drink water or chew gum after midnight.  You go in, drink the drink, wait one hour, and then get your blood drawn.  I'm not sure how the 3 hour one goes.

  • They gave me instructions and sent the drink home with me. I couldn't drink or eat 2 hours prior to starting the test. I drank my drink @ home and then got to the lab 15 mins early and had to tell them what time I had to have my blood drawn...ie exactly 1 hour after 1st sip of drink.... the results came in 2 days later!

  • I think I had to fast for my 1 hour with DS.  I did the test in the morning.  They drew my blood, I drank the crap, sat for an hour and they drew my blood again.  Same thing for the 3 hour.  I had to sit there for the entire time.  It sucked, so if you do have to do it, bring a book.

  • I have my 1 hour next week. My doctors office gave me the glucose drink to take home with me and I was told to drink it 45 mins before arriving there but I have a friend whos doctors office made her sit there for an hour before hand and drink it. I guess it varies by doctors office so it'd be best to call yours and ask how they do things.

  • From what my doctor said, fasting gives a more accurate result (not necessarily in your favor). But, after you drink the drink, you do have to wait an hour until you get your blood drawn.

For the 3 hour, you have to fast as the first poke is a fasting blood sugar. Then you get to wait there for 3 hours (not fun). You get poked four times overall (fasting, 1 hour, 2 hour, and 3 hour).

It all depends on the office/lab whether you get results right away or not. I do it at my doctors office, and they draw blood and send it out, so it takes a couple days

  • My OB told me to eat a normal breakfast before I come in which I'm really glad about because I think I'd have a hard time holding the drink down on an empty stomach.  Not sure why some do it this way and others have you fast.  My office has you come in, drink the drink, draw your blood, then you have a regular check up- it will be my 28 week appointment and then you sit for the remainder of the hour and draw your blood again.

  • I had to fast, my appt was in the early morning.

Yes you have to sit for an hour and then get your blood drawn they need to determine how your body metabolize the sugary drink. 3 hours test is the same but you sit for 3 hours.

You probably won't get the results right away, as the lab will need to send them out to a main lab or run the results.

  • My Dr told me not to eat anything 2 hours before the test. I drank the drink and afterwards had my regular appt. So I wasn't waiting around the whole hour. Then I went to the lab (which is across the parking lot) and they took my blood. At the lab they said my Dr would have the results the next day. I called a week later after not hearing anything and talked to a nurse who let me know I passed.
  • Every Dr is different.  My Dr gave me instructions and the drink at my last appointment.  She said that I didn't have to fast, but to just avoid high sugary foods (think eggs, yogurt, high protein) the day of.  I'm suppose to drink my bottle on the way to the office and let them know what time I started drinking it.  Then I have my normal visit and have my blood drawn at the end.  I'm pretty grateful for that so I'm not sitting around waiting an hour.
