baby wheezing after eating?

has anyone had this issue?  I called the dr. yesterday and he seems to think that it is milk caught in her throat since it is intermittant and when he saw her each day in the hospital she was the "spitter" meaning she was the one who was spitting up more... he told me to feed her upright and let her sit upright after the feeding.  I have a baby nurse here to help out (my husband also has a disability so we decided an extra set of hands was the best thing)  I am not in love with this idea, but with DH's disability combined with my c section limitations and 2 babies its really not an option to not have her for 2 weeks.  She is more old school and keeps telling me its "ok" or "normal"  I of course have made her do what the dr. said to do, but I am trying not to be crazed over every noise...  any advice or people who have the same thing with their LOs.  I keep thinking she can't breath and panicking.......

Re: baby wheezing after eating?

  • <<hugs>> I know how scary wheezing can be.

I've never heard of wheezing after eating. I took my two little ones to a pulmonologist because one baby was wheezing after his bath. It was determine that they both have seasonal wheezing problems, during cold/flu season. I have a nebu at home and I give them treatments when ever they need it.

I would take her in just to make sure, she's so little and I wouldn't take any chances when it comes to breathing problems. I hope is nothing.

  • Noah is a VERY noisy baby.  He is also a big spitter.  He does make a wheezing sound intermittently during the day, but not just after eating.  His pedi said it was normal and likely due to his small nasal cavity (since he was just 2 weeks old at the time)

Since then, it has gotten less.  He still spits up after feedings and grunts a ton, but otherwise seems fine.

His pedi said to get some plain saline drops and put a drop in his nose once or twice a day, then use the suction bulb to 'clear' him out.  So far, it doesn't seem to do much, so I'm only using it every few days.

  • Hi- I have triplets and 2 of my babies had this exact issue.  I found that holding the baby in front of me worked the best for feeding.  The baby is facing me and more upright than he would have been cradled in my arms-  but also not sitting totally upright.  Basically rest your elbow on your knees and support the babies head with your hand.  My kids were premies and the nurses in the special care nursey showed us this trick.  As for afterwards, I would set the babies in their highchairs (they reclined) or the swing.  My doctors suggested this becasue the said the wheezing was a sign of reflux.  If the baby is forced to sit up for too long then they will become uncomfortable due to the reflux issues.

Anywyas, my babies are 4 1/2 mo. adn we don't have the issues anymore.  Just be patient... they should work themselves out.

  • My little guy did this and I was worried too.  The doctor seemed to think that it was fine.  He grew out of it in a few weeks.  It just seemed like he needed to clear his throat all the time.  I usually feed them in their boucy chairs, if that helps.
