My baby's nursery is too cold. Help! :)

The nursery is already set up and ready to go. But, for some reason it's the coldest room in the house. The baby is going to sleep in her bassinet next to our bed for the 1st few weeks but I was wondering that once we transitioned her to her room would I be able to have a small heater in there to keep her warm? I don't think I want the house heater on when she's in there because the house gets fairly warm with it on and I don't want her to be overheated.

Also, I was planning on having a small fan in there to help with the air circulation. I don't know how that would work If I need a heater to keep the room warm. Indifferent     What do you ladies think?  TIA!

  • Your baby will most likely be sleeping in a wearable blanket, correct? As long as the temperature isn't below 68 the temperature should be fine.

  • My DS's room is freezing and we have been using a space heater in his room since birth (in the winter, at least). I also have a temperature gauge in there so I was able to check it when I went in to feed him so we could keep it at the recommended 68 degrees. I was really paranoid about overheating and dressed him relatively lightly. I think a space heater is fine as long as it's a new, safe one and not near any curtains, etc. And you can still run the fan--it doesn't necessarily have to be pointed at her if you are just using it for circulation, if that makes sense.

  • I am having the SAME issue.  Our LO's room is the coldest room in the winter (well, whatever you want to call a San Diego winter) and the hottest in the summer. I am anticipating the heat in the next few months to be the biggest problem.  Using A/C all day is uber-expensive, so I don't know what to do.

For your issue, I would say its better to have a "too cold" room than hot - in terms of SIDS risk.  You can always put LO to bed with a hat, and layer on a onesie with a sleep n play, socks and then a fleece swaddle blanket.  I think that should be good to keep her warm.

  • What is too cold?

It is too warm for your central heat to be on, but too cold in her room?

I know that we will have our AC on shortly after our baby arrives and I am not worried about that.  Adjust what she wears in her crib accordingly.

  • Basically it's freezing in there once night comes around. I too have this HUGE fear of overheated her and that is why I don't want the main heater on when she's in there. I'll take your advice and bundle her up real good, get a space heater and keep track of the temperature. Thank you so much!

Yes, she will definitely be wearing one.

I'm confused - do you have a thermostat?  It should be able to maintain a comfortable temperature, and not overheat your child.

  • We put a space heater in DS's room.  It was the perfect solution for us

ETA:  The heater we bought has a thermostat so there are no worries about overheating the room

  • The first thing I would do is make sure the heating vents are open and the window is all the way closed. If it's chilly but not freezing then I wouldn't worry about it. She'll be wearing clothes or some sort of sleep sack while she's sleeping so she should be ok. If it's really, really cold then I might look ways to keep the room warm (a ceiling fan, heavy curtains, etc) before looking at portable heaters.
  • we have a small space heater in DD's room cuz her room is the coldest in the hous;  it has a fan function on it

  • We put in a baseboard heater that had it's own thermostat and is oil based so that it stay warm longer but doesn't get hot to the touch.  We also re-insulated all of the walls in the nursery (we have an old house and upstate NY gets pretty cold in the winter).
