pap smear ?/mirena specific (sorry if tmi)

My pap is on Monday.  Of course, yesterday, I started spotting.  I've had my mirena since late September and have had very light spotting until last month.  Last month my light AF lasted 6 days, but this month instead of being red it's brown blood. This leads me to believe that it's residuals and not for real.  Do I need to call and reschedule?  I don't want to mess up my results...

Re: pap smear ?/mirena specific (sorry if tmi)

  • I dont do mirena, but it should be just fine unless you have heavy discharge.  I have had paps during AF and it was fine. The yjust use a rather large looking q tip to blot away the blood, and do the sample for the pap.  I hate rescheduling a pap, and I have had two different gyn offices that never balk at doing a pap when there is bloody discharge.  The only thing that has ever messed up a pap for me is having sex the night before.  Who knew?  It causes inflamed cells in the pap and a repeat visit.  I would just die if I bled for 6 days...ever.  Aside from post partum, I would be making an appointment if that happened to me.  4 days is all I can stand.

  • my gyn always told me not to reschedule when af was visiting, however, the one time i did have a pap when af was in town, it hurt so much more than normal. they had trouble finding my cervix and i was hurting for several days after. so i will always reschedule when af is in town, even if they say not to.
  • Good!  I hate rescheduling things!

And fwiw, the 6 days of bleeding was absurdly light.  Most days didn't even require a tampon...

  • If you're still spotting/bleeding tomorrow morning, I would call.

I also have Mirena, and had some breakthrough bleeding last month. Of course the day of my annual exam. I called to see what I should do, and they said my doctor prefers to reschedule patients who are bleeding at the time of the exam.

I don't think it's necessary, but it may be your doctor's preference.
