Cloth diapering questions

I realize I can probably look through previous posts, but I'm on my 2nd glass of wine and feeling a little lazy.  :)

I've been looking into cloth diapering and have some questions.

1) Has it been your experience that cloth diapers have less blow-out potential than disposables?

2) If you use an AIO, do you change the whole diaper or just the insert?

3) Are the cloth diapers bulky?  How well do they fit under pants?

4) How many diapers do you have in your stash?  How many days does this typically last?

5) What type/quantity of diapers would you recommend to someone trying out cloth diapering for the first time?

Re: Cloth diapering questions

  • 1) Has it been your experience that cloth diapers have less blow-outpotential than disposables?

We have never had a poop leak, but we have had a couple wet leaks. Sposies definitely gave us more blowouts!

    2) If you use an AIO, do you change the whole diaper or just the insert?

Whole diaper. The only time you would change only the insert is if you were using PFs/covers, the Flip system, or fitteds/covers.

    3) Are the cloth diapers bulky?  How well do they fit under pants?

I prefer to say they are "fluffy" and wearing pants sometimes makes DD look like an Oompa-Loompa. But I think its cute, and she is normally in BabyLegs rather than pants.

    4) How many diapers do you have in your stash?  How many days does this typically last?

We currently have 12 but are in the process of beefing up to 20ish. I wash every other day but she in sposies at night.

    5) What type/quantity of diapers would you recommend to someone trying out cloth diapering for the first time?

I would rec doing a trial of different brands and types before investing in one kind. We loved PFs and Thirsties covers for the first couple months, then switched to pockets. My fave pockets are BG 3.0 and HH OS. I also love our Thirsties AIO. Quantity depends on how often you want to wash. In the NB stage, we easily went through 12 (sometimes more) per day. Its less now, but not by much.

If you are looking for diapers that are the closest in use to disposables, AIOs would probably be your best bet because there is no stuffing or folding or pinning.. you simply put it on like you would a sposie, and throw it in the pail instead of the trash.

ETA: I just saw that your LO is not a NB, so disregard all my info about the NB stage! ;)

  • 1.  YES!  Much less blow out potential.  In 18 months, we've only come close twice.

    2.  Change the whole diaper!

    3.  Yes, they're bulky.  Fit fine under pants bought with the idea that they need to go over them.  I ask relatives to size up on pants if they buy an outfit [usually come in separates, but sized pant/top combos have always fit just fine].

    4.  5 dozen.  [Purchased 3 dozen, but HH sent me some free replacements.]  You only need 3 dozen to get by for 2-3 days.  Any longer than that and your house will smell as bad as those who use sposies...

    5.  Personally, a One Size "velcro" closure AIO or pocket style diaper.  We narrowed down our preferences to this type and are VERY HAPPY with our Bum Genius 3.0 [x12] and Happy Heineys One Size [x 48].

  • 1 - Way less blow outs. The only BOs we've had were from user error of someone (DH) putting the cover on our prefolds wrong. We haven't had any BOs with our BGs that we are using at night.

2 - We used the prefolds with covers up until tomorrow so we would only change the inside prefold unless she pooed all over the place inside the cover. The BGs we're going to use have the pocket and we will change the whole diaper at every change.

3 - The prefolds were not too bulky, the BGs are bulky. We will use pants/clothes that fit appropriately if we need to.

    4 - The prefolds I had 28-30 and 7-8 covers total (i think)
The BGs I have 30 I think. This lets me do laundry every 3 days unless we have a bad poop day then it might be every other day

5 - I like the BGs onesize. I plan on having more kids so they will be reusable with them too. There are trial programs you can try to see what diaper you want to use for a really small fee. Jilliansdrawers.com has one and there are others but I'm not sure where.

  • 1) Has it been your experience that cloth diapers have less blow-out potential than disposables?Oh definitely. We've had very few poo-splosions since doing cloth. We did sposies from birth till about two and a half weeks, and had TONS of leaks/splosions.

    2) If you use an AIO, do you change the whole diaper or just the insert? AIO diapers are All In One. No inserts... Maybe you mean pocket diapers? You change he whole diaper for a pocket diapers. The only diapers that you jut change the inside is prefolds and covers, you reuse the cover.

    3) Are the cloth diapers bulky?  How well do they fit under pants? Depends on the diaper. We use Bum Genius 30 OS, and Basi, has to wear pants a size(sometimes two depending on the pants brand) up from her normal size.

    4) How many diapers do you have in your stash?  How many days does this typically last? I had 24 Bum Genius, and we did laundry every other day. Now we have 36 and do laundry about every third or third and a half day.

    5) What type/quantity of diapers would you recommend to someone trying out cloth diapering for the first time? Bum Genius! Easy and cute, and not as expensive as a lot of diapers out there!

  • I've been a cloth diapering Mama since DS was a couple of weeks old and I love it!  Once you start, you'll become addicted Stick out tongue

    1)  Even as a newborn we had blowouts with 'sposies but haven't had any major poopslosions in CD's.

    2) Yeah, the bummer about the AIO's is that you have to change them each time.  If you're new to cloth, try PF's and covers first and then move to AIO's if you want to keep going.

    3) You'll find CD's are bulkier than 'sposies so I suggest you buy one size pants up from your baby's usual size.

    4) My DS is almost 8 months old so we're onto the Real Nappies
Crawler size PF's and covers.  The 18 cloth diapers and 6 covers last us 2 days before we have to wash.

    5) I would try PF's and covers for the first time and then move onto AIO's if you decide you like it.  Buying in bulk will save $$ so take a look at bundle  packs.

    Good luck!
