2nd Trimester

I think I'm gaining too much weight and I don't know why! (long)

Both times I have gone off BCP, I gained a solid 5 lbs.  So for both pregnancies, I was already 5 lbs up when I became pregnant.  For my 1t pregnancy, it was like an eating free for all.  I never had m/s, but was always STARVING and would just eat the first food I saw.  This time around, I've been eating/snacking more healthy.  I have always had healthy breakfasts - kashi or shredded wheat, egg whites w/cheese, wheat bread w/peanut butter.  For lunch I still have a big salad as I did before the pregnancy, but usually with hald sandwich instead of just protein over the salad (grilled chicken, tuna)  I've been snacking once mid am and again mid afternoon - yogurt, cheese stick, carrots, fruit. (I'm hungry often so I've been making better choices) Sometimes I'm not even hungry at dinner and I'll have PB&J or a bowl of cereal.  Maybe a few cookies for dessert.  Oh and for the past year I've been exercising religiously, so I've been exercising during this pregnancy.  Not as much as before, but 3-4 times week, for 20-30 minutes.  For my 1st pregnancy I gained 50 lbs, so my goal for this one was not more than 30, and my doctor agreed.  But I'm barely into my 2nd trimester, and I'm up a solid 101-12 lbs!  It's very frustrating, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  Can anyone offer any advice?

  • If your worried I would talk to your Dr about how your gaining. If they aren't concerned you should be fine. I think if your making healthy choices your body gains the weight it needs. Everyones bodies are different and gain weight and experience pregnancy differently.

  • I would think the best thing to do is ask your dr. if you aren't sure.  If s/he agrees that you're gaining too much, s/he can recommend dietary changes or a nutritionist if need be.  If your dr. isn't concerned yet, just keep doing what you're doing.  Some people just gain what they gain, there is no stopping it.  Good luck!
  • Don't worry. It will come off. Sometimes it has nothing to do with what you are eating and how your are exercising. It is so many factors - how much amniotic fluid you have, how your boobs are growing, how you fat stores are working, etc. And every person and every pregnancy are different. You might gain more now, but not much in the 3rd trimester for example. Your body knows what it needs to do. Don't worry. Just keep eating right and taking care of yourself.

It could also be second pregnancy too. Your body knows what to do. I was kind of like you. With my first, I lost weight in the first tri because I was so sick. Then I got 2 stomach bugs in the 2nd tri. I really did not start gaining weight till the 30 weeks. I craved ice cream and cheeseburgers and gained only about 20 lbs which I lost crazy fast and some by breastfeeding. With my second, I was already up 10 lbs at my 20 week appointment and I am much more active with this one (chasing after a 2-year-old!) and my cravings have been crazy healthy like fruit smoothies and veggies. Whatever! I'm trying not to even pay attention to weight gain this time!

  • I agree that you sound like you are making good healthy choices for yourself.  I agree that you should not worry but from your post it's clear that will be easier said than done for you.  Talk with your doctor, pregnancy is different for everyone and how your body reacts just may be how it reacts.

Did your doctor have issue with your weight gain last time?

  • same here! i gained 73 pounds with my first, so i told my self from day one that i will NOT gain that much this time!! lol but im almost 28 weeks and i just had my check up and i've gained 20 pounds already.. im nervous.. i mean obviously i still have a good chance on not gaining as much as i did with baby #1 but still i only wanted to gain like 25 pounds with this one but im not even in my 3rd tri yet.. so idk.. i hope i can find some thing that works.. i also feel the more i try.. the worse i do.. so maybe i shouldnt worry about it as much!! good luck!!
  • I too had gained 5 lbs when stopping BCP, but that was before my first son. This time, I started 13 pounds heavier than I did with my 1st pregnancy. 1st pregnancy I gained 30 pounds but ate well and exercised, my goal this time was 25 pounds. I had horrible m/s and didn't gain any weight until about 20 weeks- then it started packing on. Two weeks ago I gained FIVE pounds in one week. I am almost 27 weeks but still only up about 13 pounds so I am hoping I can still stay at my goal of 25 overall. The week I gained 5 pounds there is seriously NO explanation, I calorie count and always stay under 2,000 ( around 1,700 is average), not much exercise but I am running around and I have a 2 year old. Basically your body is just doing what it's going to do...my doc was not worried at all, and said to just eat smart and don't worry about it. I know how frustrating it is to see the numbers going up and up and up, especially when your not pigging out! It will all balance out in the end.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about it personally. If you work out a lot, you also tend to burn more because of your metabolism. When I was working out every day, I ate all day--and literally was at the heaviest weight ever, although I was very toned and in a great shape. As long as you are eating healthy and keeping yourself active, you'll be fine.

  • I don't think you're doing anything wrong. It sounds like you're making good food choices and exercising. There's not much else you can do.

I think that some women just tend to gain more while pg than others. Maybe it's the hormones effecting our bodies differently.

I gained 65 lbs with my 1st. She was 10 days overdue and 9lbs2oz. I was at 1 lb/week up until mid 3rd trimester, and I think I gained 10 lbs in the last 10 days.

This time first trimester I was doing a little better. I think I was up 10 lbs at 12 weeks which, while not great compared to everyone else, was better for me. Now at almost 20 weeks, I'm up 20 lbs again. I'm not exercising, and I'm not eating as well as I could, but I'm beginning to think that even if I did, I would have gained this much. It sucks, but I'm not willing to go hungry to try to gain less while pg.
