Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I think I have solved DS's eczema problem (long).

I know many medical professionals dismiss the connection between infant eczema and food.  Nikolai just kept getting two patches of eczema on his face and occassionally on his belly.  I would use the ointments, etc with no avail.

So finally I thought back to any changes I'd made to his diet since birth.  I recalled we switched formula a few times around 3 months because we were trying to solve his gas issues.  We settled on Similac Sensative (generic version) which is a mix of soy and lactose.  Nik never had eczema early on, so I decided to take him off the soy (which he was not on previously).

Nik has been off the soy formula for almost 2 weeks now and his patches are gone for the first time in months.  He had not broken out on his belly and his face is clear.  I am so glad I finally did this.

  • I don't know who is dismissing the connection between eczema and food. Both Grant's pedi and derm agree that formula with dairy/lactose was causing his eczema.

At 2 months, we switched to nutramigen - within 24 hours he was no longer screaming in pain, within 48 hours he was happy/smiling, within 72 hours the thick eczema patches that had built up on his chest and forearms was starting to disintegrate and within two full weeks they were GONE. Smooth skin. The bumpy rash patches had also disappeared within the first week of the change.

We have started to allow some foods that contain 'trace' amounts of cheese/dairy - most times we are okay but if he has too much - we end up with eczema rash all over his stomach and inside of legs.

  • That's fantastic.

Our pediatrician also poopooed the idea of L's skin issues being food related (even though I have extensive food allergies myself). I finally brought her to a pediatric allergist and had her tested, and low and behold, she has some of my allergies.

  • that's awesome that you found the solution! yay for a persistent Mommy! :)

I think you replied to my last post (and said your LO's eczema was food related too) where DS's chiro had said eczema is almost always food related and another poster (I believe she is in peds derm) said no way.  Well, my pedi said no way too but I didn't buy it.  So I followed my gut and took out the only thing we had changed.

  • Good to know. DD has a relatively minor eczema issue but will definitely look into the food allergy association as DH had many allergies growing up.
