High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone else taking prometrium suppositories?

My OB has me on prometrium (progesterone) suppositories for my PTL and short cervix and I've been on them now for a little over 2 weeks (now 30 weeks pg). I'm "taking" 200 mg every night before bed and my question is this: anyone else taking these having alot of discharge? I feel wet down there pretty much constantly and have taken to wearing panty liners. I mentioned to my OB and she sent me for US to see if I was leaking fluid and they found no tears or leaking. So I'm wondering if it is due to the suppositories...

Re: Anyone else taking prometrium suppositories?

  • i took endometrin suppositories in my first trimester. you pretty much have constant discharge while on them, i always wore panty liners. so it's totally normal.

  • ok...I'm dying to know....are the Prometrium suppositories different than the oral Prometrium capsules???  I take Prometrium 200 mg three times a day and they make me drowsy and soooooooooo sleepy....I was wondering if they can be taken another route....if so, do you guys have any side effects from the suppositories?
  • I just called my OB about these yesterday and they said they won't use them when it's your first pregnancy.  I really want to take them because I've read only good things!
  • This is my first pregnancy and they have me on them... The only side effects I have from taking them vaginally are some dizziness in the morning and possibly the watery discharge (which could be a side effect but I'm not sure). To be honest, I'm not real sure what they do but I know it's something to do with staying pregnant lol.
  • I've been using micronized progesterone suppositories for my cervix since 22 weeks.  There is definitely an increase in discharge with any sort of vaginal suppository.  When I first started taking them, I was panicked over every little bit of discharge; now that I've been on them for 2 months I am more accustomed to it and know that if I were truly leaking fluid, it would feel different/more consistent.  I usually wear a pad, but find that the adhesives on pads tend to irritate my skin so take a lot of breaks from them and just wear crappy underwear.

My advice is to just buy a bunch of pads/liners, and if you are nervous, have them check your fluid levels when you go in for cervical checks.

If you don't mind my asking- this is your first pregnancy right?

My OB said they won't use them on twin pregnancies or first ones...I really want to get on these!

  • I take the prometrium/ progesterone suppositories and for the first few days I didn't have very much discharge. (I also take 200 mg every night.) After 2 or 3 days I started to have a lot of discharge. I chalked it up to the medicine. A couple times I saw white stuff in the toilet and my doc told me that some women's bodies don't absorb the capsule very well so he thought the white stuff was the capusle (and it was very little).  Well, 6 weeks later I found out that I had a yeast infection. I didn't even know because I didn't have any symptoms other than a little extra discharge. I was really shocked. Once I took meds to get rid of the yeast infection the discharge went back to a more normal amount. It sounds like you were just checked, but if you feel the discharge is abnormal you might want to have them check you really quick to ensure that it really is the medicine and not a yeast infection.
