Failed 1 Hour, need advice

Okay, I had to do my 1 hour glucose screening yesterday out of the blue. I hadn't been scheduled for it so it ended up being an afterthought. They asked if I had an hour free, I did, so I took the test. I got a call today saying that my numbers were 157, quite a bit higher than the 130 they wanted to see. They asked me to come in on Monday to take the 3 hour test.

After my little break down from the phone call I started doing some research online to find out what I should expect. I stumbled across a website that cautioned not to take the screening or the 3 hour test when you're sick because your blood glucose levels spike. I have been fighting off the swine flu for about a week now. I got the vaccine so it isn't as severe as it could have been but it still hit me pretty hard.I called the nurse to inform her of this and she said to get plenty of fluids and rest over the weekend, then come in and take the 3 hour anyway. Also, I had a pretty big carb/low protein meal right before I went in for the screening, so could that have affected my results?

Now I'm worried that I may fail the three hour as a result of being sick and will have worried over nothing. Also, the nurse never even told me about eating enough carbs the days leading up to the 3 hour. I feel so frustrated and worried all at the same time and I'm not sure how to handle it. Our hospital doesn't set appointments for the 3 hour, you just pick a day and walk in to have it done. So, should I go ahead and take the test on Monday, or should I wait until I feel better? I'm terrified of needles so the idea of being on insulin seems horrible to me, but I also do not want to do anything to jeopardize the health of our baby so I feel guilty for thinking I should wait. What would you ladies do?

  • It's true that being sick could affect your test, I'd definitely ask your doctor's opinion.  If you decide to postpone it until you feel better, you could at least try to limit your carbs/sugars until you feel well enough to take the test.  That way, you'll be sure to get accurate results, but you risk harming the baby by waiting.  Hope you feel better, the flu is wicked!

  • 85% of people that fail the 1 hr pass the 3 hr test.  They want you to take it ASAP so that if you do have GD you can get on a proper diet.  Lots of people have diet controlled GD, but most do have to check their blood sugar multiple times a day.

I don't think feeling ill should make you fail the test if your cells are properly functioning.  If you are feeling nauseous at all though I wouldn't go in until that goes away, vomiting is apparently a common occurrence with this test (I had it and haven't thrown up in at least 4 years) and going in feeling sick to your stomach would probably set you up badly.

  • I am taking my 3 hour on Monday. My doc had wanted me to take it this past week but I am sick with bronchitis and she told me to wait because being sick can spike your nnumbers.
  • it seems weird that they would have you take the one hour with no notice...I had to fast for 12 hours prior to the one hour....

You definitely want to feel good when you go for the 3 hour, the drink is very sweet.

Lastly, I failed the one hour, passed the 3 hour....my dr. had me do 300 grams of carbs a day for the three days prior to the test, so that the test isn't a complete shock to your system....

Good luck, I am sure you will be fine.

  • Thanks to everyone for the input. We live outside of town and have to go in on Wednesday for another appointment, so we decided to do the 3 hour that morning instead of today. Hopefully this gives me a little time to get over being sick also. I was never told about eating carbs so I guess I can try to get more in tomorrow. I'm actually a little frustrated at the nurse I spoke with about this whole thing. She gave me minimal information and pretty much brushed off any concerns I had. Luckily, I have a Dr.'s appointment next week so I can talk to her about it rather than the nurse. Here's to hoping the 3 hour goes well! :)
