Adoption

homestudy

Our homestudy is Friday and I'm a nervous wreck. I know through past posts that there's nothing to worry about and we should just be ourselves. But, I can't help that nagging feeling at the pit of my stomach screaming at me to clean more, pick up more, dress better, do something. I know, I'm rattling away, but any advice would be most appreciated Big Smile

  • Remember that they're not looking for a reason to disqualify you from adopting. They're looking for yet more reasons to help you adopt.

You don't want your house to look like a museum. You want it to look like a place a child would be comfortable in.

As long as the house, is clean, safe, and standing, you'll be fine.

    Good luck!

  • We looked at our HS as a way to share our relationship and life with our SW. We looked at it as an opportunity to show her what kind of life our child would have and how we would be as parents. If it makes you feel any better, at one meeting with our agency, I spilled my latte into my purse! Luckily she thought it was funny, and she said that I will now understand how a kid feels when they spill something, lol!

  • Ditto pp. I was *so* nervous. In the end, I think our social worker seriously took 10 minutes to look at our house. She really just wanted to get to know us. She had a few questions about our autobiographies, and spent the rest of the time getting to know us. She gave us some great advice on things we didn't know or hadn't thought about and we asked a ton of questions. Within 10 minutes of her arriving, I was at complete ease.

Good luck - everything will go great!

  • Just **try** to relax.  Our SW didn't even walk into all of the rooms.  She just glanced in and kept moving.  We spent more time talking than we did touring the house.  I definitely wouldn't say that she inspected our home.

This was the same for us.  She just wanted to see that the house was in good repair, clean, and cared for.  The rest of the appointment was us talking in-depth about ourselves, our relationship, family, friends, support, reasons for adoption, activities, etc.

I was a nervous wreck leading up to our appointment, but the moment she arrived, I calmed down, and we were laughing and talking on the couch as if to a good friend.  I've had far worse job interviews!
