Choroid Plexus Cyst found on baby girl...

Hi Ladies,

I received a call from my doctor yesterday saying that the results from my 19 wk anatomy scan show that our baby girl has a choroid plexus cyst on her brain. Apparently this occurs in 1-3% of all 2nd trimester ultrasounds and will generally go away on its own by about 28 weeks. The scary part is the doctor also said it is a 'soft marker' for Trisomy 18. I was told not to worry because the rest of the scan was perfect, and if she actually has T18 then she would most likely have other major defects as well in the heart, kidneys, hands, feet, etc..and she would probably be smaller than her gestational age. All measurements mirrored her brothers (with the exception of the CPC of course - he didn't have that) and both babies measured exactly 18w6d and weighed an estimated 10oz.

I've been told to schedule a level II ultrasound for a second opinion and also closer look at what might be T18 abnormalities.

So, even given the CPC diagnosis she still has a 99.7% chance of being perfectly healthy. I guess I'm just wondering - has anyone heard of this or perhaps been given this diagnosis?

I am a little scared but most things I've read have indicated positive results...Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Any advice/experience/knowledge on this would be great.

Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst found on baby girl...

  • I know my cousin and a friend had these on their babies and both went away and are perfectly healthy.  They disappeared when they went back for scans later in the pregnancy. I am sure everything is fine, although it is hard not to worry.

  • One of our boys had a CPC at our 17-week ultrasound. He also had other soft markers for chromosomal abnormalities (echogenic focus, mildly echogenic bowel). Since he had multiple soft markers, we opted to do amnio on both babies. The results for both were, happily, normal. We were told all three of the issues would likely resolve themselves before birth.
  • We had this happen with our 1st son.  Not only did he have one choroid plexus cyst... he had two.  Our doctor assured us that they would more than likely resolve on their own, but of course it still sent me into a panic.  I Googled all the possibilities and made it worse for myself, especially reading that having two raises more suspicion than having one.

We had a repeat u/s done around 28 weeks (?)  and sure enough they were  gone!  Sam is a perfectly healthy, smart little boy now : )

The main thing to remember is that your doc said everything else looks fine.  There would likely be other markers for Trisomy 18 if that were the case.  Our doc wondered if sometimes the rapid growth causes these benign cysts.

  • Our DD had a CPC  and an echogenic cardiac focus, we had the level II ultrasound and saw a genetic counselor. At the time they gave us really good odds that she would be born completely healthy so we opted out of doing the amnio. Two years later she is completely healthy and very smart!

Try not too worry, I think these things are pretty normal. My Dr. told me they find them a lot and they very rarely see any that actually are connected to an abnormality.

  • One of my girls had one too, but it went away on its own.  Try not to worry!!

  • My DS1 had this show up on an ultrasound.  My MFM at the time said that it is EXTREMELY common and now that u/s equipment is getting more precise and clearer they are showing up more and more.  It was gone by the next u/s and he is a perfectly healthy 2 year old.  I wouldn't worry too much if everything else looks great!
  • A blogger I follow had a little girl who had one of these and she turned out to be perfectly healthy and fine. I'll pray for the same outcome for our little girl! I know how scary these things can be. (We didn't have this happen but one of my boys did have echogenic foci on his heart discovered at the anatomy scan that can be a soft marker for Down's--1% chance of problems, but he turned out to be fine and healthy as well. I know it's scary though, even knowing there's a small chance.)

  • I had the exact same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago at our anatomy scan. ?Baby B has a choroid plexus cyst on his brain as well, and Dr. had same conversation with us re: T18, etc. ?

We left that appt. really shaken, but upon calling my OB/GYN and talking wit her, as well as just doing a lot of reading on line, we're feeling much better about it. ?OB actually said, "I wish they didn't even have to tell mothers about these cysts!" because no other signs are pointing to T18, and chances are they cyst should disappear. ?But I guess they just have to be thorough, and tell you everything.

?Bottom line is, I think everything is going to be just fine for both our little ones! ?Hang in there, and concentrate on all the great things that are happening with babies (good growth, good heartbeats, etc.).

    Good luck!?

  • DD had 2 or 3 of them @ our initial ultrasound around 19 weeks.  Rather than getting me super upset, the Dr downplayed it and told me absolutely no googling!  We went back @ 28 weeks and it was gone.  They also told me the same as raesue--it's not that this is more common now, it's just that u/s equipment is so much better so they can see much more now.  She was fine @ the 28 wk u/s...Don't worry, everything is probably absolutely fine!

  • Both of our twins had these at a 21 week ultrasound.  I had another scan at 26 weeks and both cysts were gone.
