We're getting a coil because they don't sell the Colgate foam (Baby Bargains best bet for foam) locally and I want to feel it for firmness before buying it. We decide to go with this organic coil mattress from Costco. Same price as as inexpensive coil or foam mattress but really well rated in Baby Bargains and online reviews:

Colgate Classica I Foam- Baby Bargains said it was the best. It's usually $150 but I found it here for 15% off this passed weekend. It was delivered in 2 DAYS! (not that I need it that fast, we dont have our furniture or nursery done yet!)

We went with the Simmons Slumber Time Sparkly Stars innerspring mattress (w/memory foam) sold at BuyBuyBaby. It was $199, and I had a 20% off coupon making it $173 with tax. It is a dual mattress that is very firm on one side for baby and then slightly less firm on the other side for a toddler. I can't find much info online about the one we bought, and I think BBB had just gotten it in. One thing to keep in mind: baby needs a FIRM mattress. I subscribe to Consumer Reports online, and it tells you the criteria for a good innerspring crib mattress: At least 135-150 coils 15.5 gauge or thicker (lower number = thicker) Should have border rods The insulator pad should be coir fiber or wrap pad, not woven polyester Just b/c a mattress has a high number of coils doesn't mean it's better - you also have to look at the gauge of the coils.
