When you print photos somewhere, do you have to show a

Photo Release from the pro photog?  I just went to pick up my pictures from Wal-greens and they told me to show them the photo release.  I have it somewhere, but I can't find it.

I'm in tears because I have this centerpiece thing for C's party tomorrow and I can't get my pictures.

I emailed the photog for another copy, but I think they are out doing a wedding this weekend.  Crying

Any ideas?

  • yes, i had this issue before when scanning and printing something at a wal-greens ugh.   i just changed it from color to black and white and the scanner 'allowed' it lol.   anyway  so are they going to hold them hostage?   are they digital prints? I am confused!

  • i thought that usually the fact that you have them on disk is the photog essentially giving you the rights to print them or use them as you see fit?

otherwise it would have a "proof" watermark on it, right?

ETA: my wedding photog who also took pics of C burned the files to a disk that i selected- and that was the release pretty much (i asked to make sure bc i know you need a release)

  • If my clients get prints from Wal Mart, Target or Walgreens they have to show my print release form. But your best bet might be trying to fill the order at Wal Mart or Target or even Kmart and just see if one of them is feeling nice and will just give you the prints w/o a release form.

They are holding them hostage.  They are digitals.. I went in last night and made my order - and I was supposed to pick them up today.

I ordered some from online and they shipped them.  I asked them I could have them shipped without a photo release.. the guy didn't have an answer.. Uggghhh!!!

  • I think Walmart has a form you can fill out saying you have rights to the photos that they keep on file so if you don't and the photographer finds out you printed them, Walmart isn't liable. My mom has had trouble printing pictures I took and she said they made her fill one out.
  • Go in tomorrow and see if someone else is working , maybe they will be nice and give them to you without even paying attention. If not ask to speak the manager and tell them that you order from them all the time and that your photographer told you that the cd was the release because she specifically took her watermark off so that you could use them as you like.

  • CVS doesn't care.  I'm bad, I've taken our professional prints there and made copies Huh?

On the CD is says, "The digital negative contained on this disk are copyright2009 [Photorapher's Name].  The copright holder gives permission for reproduction of these images for personal use only."

Do you think they will accept that?

I'll have to go in tomorrow and try.  I already called and griped to the manager tonight, half sobbing, and he was still an ass.

That sounds like a copyright release to me!

  • Oh yeah try walmart like the girls said. You can probably get them printed in an hour...I printed all my wedding prints there and they were professional ones from a cd that I bought. Never had an issues printing them. I have the release just in case but you could always ask your photographer to put a copy of the release on each disk ...there is one on my wedding cd so they can see it right there if they want. If they email it to you make sure you save it!
  • This has happened to me at two different Walgreen's.  Walmart has never asked.  Check your CD for a release.  I've had two different places put an electronic copy on the disk.

They should, that's basically what mine says. The only difference is that mind is a signed piece of paper. So yeah like what Mrs.L said you could forge a form.

ETA: Disclaimer I only condone this because I know she has the rights. If you're scanning photos w/o a release I don't approve. Esp if it's from a small business owner, prints are the income to a lot of pro. photographers out there.

  • Do the pictures have a watermark on them? If not then I would just say you took the pictures...or make a release...

  • I do think the language on the CD constitutes a release.?

Is there a Fed-Ex/Kinko's near you? ?They have scanner/printer things that will print immediately and you put your credit card into the machine ... so no one to check for a release, etc. ?

GL - that stinks! ?You must be very frustrated.?

  • Yes.  Walgreens is holding my pics hostage right now.  DH's best friend is a professional photographer and took some awesome pics for her 1 year photo shoot and we can't freaking get them until we get the paper signed (which is next to impossible since DH's BF is always traveling).

    Good luck!

  • Go somewhere else!

My friend, who is a photographer, puts that message on all of her disks.  She says that is her release.

  • I get all my photos printed from Costco.  I've had photos printed from 2 different photographers and had no problem.  I also didn't receive an actual document with the release to me, either.
