When I hear them, I let them play and start getting their food ready, getting high chairs, bibs, etc. By that time they are ready to get up, I have everything set up.

I feel they are doing independent time--E, for ex., tends to wake up and "talk" to her mobile for a good bit and I just let her coo until she cues to me that I should pick her up.
If you're fortunate enought that they'll play for a bit, let them. I've gotten to the point where I put a few board books in Emerson's crib. When she wakes in the mornings she'll spend an hour in her room looking at her books.
She never, ever cries when waking up. I feel so lucky!

I let them play until I hear them starting to fuss. I actually love listening to them babble. It's so cute. I'll turn on the video monitor and it's one of my favorite things to watch.
I let gavin hang out for a lil bit when he wakes up, as long as he is content. but he has never been one to wake up crying unless he was newborn or something is wrong...like teething

I let them play until either they start whining to get out or if it's time to eat. Mine didn't sleep well until they were a little over 8 months so I now cherish the time that they wake up playing in their crib. I feel like they've made so much progress.
i let them play until they let me know that it's time for me to go in there or until it gets to feeding time (i stick to the schedule pretty hard core).
Re: when babies wake from nap and play quietly do you...

I let mine play until I hear crying.
Which can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.
I just went up and got my boys out of their cribs because one was screaming. They woke up from their nap an hour ago.
I do the same thing in the morning.
As long as I can hear them laughing and having fun I leave them up there.
