Slow physical development in infant?

Did any of you have a child that seemed to be generally slow with his/her gross motor skills but came out of it?  My DS is almost 1, but still kind of commando-crawls, cannot pull himself up to stand, and - while he can put food to his mouth - does not seem to have much interest in finger foods.  Other than being a few days shy of being a full-term baby, there should be no reason (i.e., genetics) that would make us expect him to be delayed.

  • Kids develop at different rates--but if you're concerned, talk to his ped about it at his 1 year appointment. They may recommend contacting EI in your state.

  • I agree I would start with EI. I am an evaluator and we see this all the time. We will be able to start therapy and try and see what is going on and why, give you ideas on how to increase his gross motor skills and get him back on track. GL
  • My DD did not crawl at all until 11.5mo, and it's really not that uncommon to be a late crawler, so that by itself should not be a worry. She was late to roll over (6mo) too. She walked at 15mo and is perfectly normal at 2.5 even if she's not the most athletic kid around. Is there another skill that he does well at? A lot of kids seem to focus on one thing and get "behind" at other skills while they are focusing on one thing - but it all evens out in the end.

  • Kate was slow in her motor skills. Rolled over at 8 months, crawled at almost 11 months, pulled up at 14.5 months, walked at 18 months.  I did have her evaluated by EI, and there was nothing major wrong with her--just some low tone.  Now, at 2.9 she is still not as coordinated as her friends and a bit behind, but she's fine.  It's just who she is.  If there are things other than motor skills you're worried about (you mentioned food?) and even if there aren't, I would talk to the pedi and check into an EI eval.
  • Pathways Awareness has developed a growth chart to help you assess your LO's development to see if it's on track: https://bit.ly/6NUpfi. If you still have concerns, bring this AAP-endorsed chart along to a visit with your healthcare professional sooner rather than later. Your LO may just need some Physical Therapy to "catch up" to where he needs to be developmentally.
