DH and I were discussing my going back to school. Although my job sounds fun, I don't feel like I am learning, growing or have the ability to move up anywhere with it.
I would love to go back to school and do something I love. Although going back full time would mean me not being able to work full time. I make about 15K more than DH and would have to go onto his benefits if I quit my job which would be even more of an expense.
Has anyone or is anyone currently going to school while working PT? Are you taking out loans for living expenses and how much do the loan people allow you to take?
Re: Anyone in school or going back?
Does your job provide any kind of education reimbursement?
I work FT and go to school. My employer reimburses me for expenses, since what I'm going for is semi-related to our industry.
Up until I had DS, I was working full time and going to school full time. I am very lucky with my timing because I go back for one final class starting on March 16th. Six more weeks of school and then I officially will be a college graduate.
I did take out student loans but not for living expenses. I didn't qualify because we make too much money anyways.
I say if you can swing it, go for it! The program that I am in is very catered to working families. School one night a week and it's an accelerated program so you finish in less time.

I go to school PT and work PT. I take out just enough loan to cover my tuition expenses. But DH is in school FT and working PT and he takes out pretty much as much as he can for his loans. We used the extra to pay rent, pay off most of my credit cards (the interest rates on the loans are going to be SO SO much lower than the ccs were). The rest is in a savings account to get paid back as soon as he graduates, so we can make a big dent in it right away.
ETA: I only took out a loan for one semester, now that I'm only in one class at a time we can afford to pay out of pocket.
Nope. Part of our negotiation to not lay people off, was to take away tuition reimbursement from our benefits.
Do you know if you have to request a certain amount? Or do they just tell you the max. your allowed to take?
I just finished school. I worked part time during the whole thing. We lived completely off of DH's salary and still are. I took out a student loan to cover tuition only and the salary I made went towards the extra expenses that comes with being a student (books, transportation etc).
I'm about 90% sure that you have to request the amount. You can ask to have it decreased for a certain period of time, but I think that's a hassle. There's an upper limit of what you can ask for. That's how DH did his. I just went to the financial aid office at my school (after i'd filled out the fafsa) and they pretty much handled everything.
