We saw the pedi late yesterday afternoon. She was kidding of course when she said that, but poor E has ear infections in both ears and a touch of pneumonia. What a rough year so far for little E - we just finished the antibi for her bladder infection a couple weeks ago and now this.
Good luck to all the mommies with your little sickies!
Re: "I'm just going to put her on amoxicillin till spring."
Oh, and we talked to her about having an u/s done b/c of the bladder infection. I thought there might be a little bit of an argument but the pedi was like, "you want to do one? No problem." Phew.
Oy, poor E sounds like me - whenever I have to be on antibiotics for something, I get sick over and over after. My poor little pathetic immune system can't handle it. Do they have probiotics for kiddos? Maybe that would help balance her out a bit. I have to take them or else I end up with infection after infection.
I need to look into probiotics more. I don't know much about them. MIL told us to give her something when she was on the antibi for her UTI so DH bought a probiotic smoothie that we mixed in with her morning yogurt. we tried to give it to her straight but she wouldn't drink it. We're going to do the same thing this time around.
Where do you get yours and what do you take?
Ugh, poor thing!! That's a lot going on for such a little person! I've heard good things about probiotics - there must be products out there meant for kids. The other thing to do is to make sure she's eating yogurt with live and active cultures (if she can eat/drink dairy). Make sure the container has "LAC" on it somewhere. Not all yogurts do. I always eat yogurt when I'm on antibiotics and it helps.
Good luck with your little sickie!
Poor Little One! It's not fair for our kiddos to get so sick all the time.
And ditto giving her yogurt w/probiotics. J used to have it for breakfast nearly every morning and loved it. I would mix together vanilla and plain (w/the "Live Active Cultures) so it wouldn't be too sweet and put cheerios in it for crunch. He loved it!
I'm sorry - I know how you feel. My DS has not had many days since starting daycare that he wasn't sick. : (
I am glad that you are going to get the U/S and hope that your DD is done being sick for awhile
It's more than just live active cultures. For kids formulas, you want at least 4 billion organisms in a quality product. If it doesn't tell you how much is in there, don't waste your money. We do Kirkman Labs.
You can also give her a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar (Bragg brand is sold at Raley's -- make sure it's raw, not just any ACV) in 8 oz of water.

Our options are limited in our little small town, so I usually would go to Pharmaca and have them guide me through what was available and get what they recommended. I think it changed every time! I started out doing the live cultures in yogurt thing but it wasn't enough for me. I haven't been on antibiotics in a long time so I don't really remember what I took, but it definitely helped! I have to take antibiotics before I go to the dentist for a cleaning and inevitable after I'd end up with tonsilitis or bladder infections or some random infection...when I started taking the probiotics (which I had to take pretty regularly, not just when I had to take the antibiotics), I didn't have those problems any longer. Woot!
Pharmaca! Forgot about that great place. There's one in Cole Valley and I'd go all the time when I lived over on that side of the city. Will have to take a drive over there this weekend.
Random personal question - do you have a heart murmur? I used to have to take amox before a cleaning too b/c I have a slight heart murmur.
I've also bought probiotics at Pharmaca. They have an infant and children's formula that seemed to help when the girls are on abx.
Hope E starts feeling better soon!
Yup! They call it mitral valve prolapse. Apparently the guidelines have changed and most people don't need to take antibiotics but my dentist wanted a doc's note saying I didn't need them. I actually just had an echo a couple weeks ago so that I can get cleared - no one has called to tell me the results so I'm hoping to get something soon. If you have a MVP you're also supposed to get heavy antibiotics during labor and delivery so I'm hoping I can avoid that as well. I only had one echo when I was 19 so I'm sure a lot has changed with the guidelines.
So in the meantime I haven't taken antibiotics before my cleanings in a couple years...shhhhhh....:)
