Hi Ladies,
I have a follow up appt with my OB on Monday and so far I have gained 8 pounds (that is based on my scale at home). I have heard that that is too much but considering it is still winter and there is too much snow to go walking / running (which I typically do in the warmer weather) and the fact that I am hungry all the time (which I am told will subside). Is anyone else in the same boat?
Thanks,
Kelly :0)
Re: How much weight gain is too much?
Frankly, I think what you're eating is much more important than how much you're gaining. And as long as you're not eating ridiculously bad-for-you food at every meal, I don't think you can control how much you gain and when. That being said, eating when hungry is a good strategy, and I think you only need an extra 200-300 calories during the first trimester or so.
The book "Real Food for Mother and Baby" by Nina Planck has really good info in it about eating while pregnant. hth
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

Hmmm.. .that didnt work out the way it was supposed to..
Here ya go.
"Weight gain during pregnancy should be gradual with the most weight being gained in the last trimester. According to the ACOG, you should gain about 2 to 4 pounds during the first three months of pregnancy and then 3 to 4 pounds per month for the rest of your pregnancy. Total weight gain should be about 25 to 30 pounds. This will decrease the risk of delivering a low-birth-weight baby. The Institute of Medicine recommends that women who have a low Body Mass Index (BMI) -- the ration of weight to height -- should gain 28 to 40 pounds during pregnancy and women who have a higher BMI should gain 15 to 25 pounds. Check with your doctor to determine how much weight gain during pregnancy is healthy for you."
I was told no more than 2-3 pounds during first tri and then no more than 20-25 pounds total.
It really depends on your starting weight. If you are overweight you really shouldn't gain more than about 15 pounds the entire pregnancy.
I think a lot of ladies forget that they shouldn't just eat whatever the hell they want just b/c they are pregnant.
Remember, you will be the one working your ass off to get lose every pound you put on.
Here is the thing you can not control really how much you gain. Your body is going to take what it needs and hold onto what it needs. Everyone is different. When I was pregnant with DS I gained 60 pounds and I started of normal size, ate right etc...it just happened.
The important this is that you give the baby what it needs and do not starve yourself just because you are not suppose to gain that extra pound during 1st tri. Just eat healthy.
I've gained 3lbs in 1st Tri and doctor said i'll probably gain about 30lb total and that is just fine. They say average is between 25-35lbs.
I think there are always things that factor in, like how big you were when you got pregnant, any medical conditions, bed rest, ect. Remember that everyone is different and work with your doctor about YOUR weight gain.
I have gained about 6 pounds so far. I agree with those that said you really can't control how much weight you gain, but you can control what you eat. Make sure you are eating healthy foods and getting a well balanced diet.
I have been so tired and so nauseous for the last couple of weeks that I stayed very sedintary. Now that I am feeling a bit better I am focusing on eating better and getting out to get a bit of exercise at least 3 times a week.
Don't get all caught up in weight (I know, easier said than done) your body is going to gain what it needs to gain.
