Pregnant after a Loss

abnormal hemoglobin results??? sorry, long

so my bloodwork shows an abnormal amount of the "normal" hemoglobin... should be in the high 90s, and mine is 82%. Since I'm a scientist, I look up what the test is and what abnormal results mean, and everything about this sounds weird... Everything is mentioning that these diseases are predominant (but still rare) in Mediterranean, African, and Asian ethnicities. We're fairly sure that I'm mostly Irish, maybe some English. And the diseases associated with abnormal hemoglobins mention heart failure between 20-30 years old, and stillbirth, and bone deformities... I'd think they'd have figured out by now if there was something seriously wrong with me.

going for a more in depth test today, and they also wanted my husband to get tested, too... I'm adopted, and I don't know my family history, and now I'm just nervous...

I'm doubting I'll get any answers from all of you, but if anyone's been through this, I'd love to hear about it...

and I guess other than that, just keep your finger crossed that everything will be ok...

thanks

PS - on positive news, HB yesterday was a REALLY strong 145, baby was moving around a whole bunch, and the big U/S is scheduled for the 4th!!

Re: abnormal hemoglobin results??? sorry, long

  • My mom (54) has tested with low hemoglobin, like dangerously low, I don't know the numbers but they called her in off hours to make sure she wasn't passed out somewhere when they got the results.  All they've done for her is give her extra iron suppliments, never found a reason why.  The only difference she has noticed since is that she's not so tired anymore.   I have no Idea what it means when you are pregnant, other than it should be higher during pregnancy.

I hope you find some answers soon.

  • I have had anemia off and on for years, but this test is different, for the different types of hemoglobin - like sickle cell, and fetal hemoglobin, and whatnot... it wasn't the hematocrit test..

I was talking with a coworker just now who remembered hearing in one of her classes about how during pregnancy in rare cases the baby doesn't make enough hemoglobin, so the baby literally takes some of your adult hemoglobin, and she said it was ok, so I'm hoping this is what's going on.
