At what point is it considered safe to use crib bumper?

I know that we won't be using our crib bumper for a while due to the risk of SIDS but I wasn't sure at what point it would be ok to use it....

Re: At what point is it considered safe to use crib bumper?

  • We bought a breathable bumper so we have used it since the get go.

  • We aren't using ours at all.  First, b/c of the risk of SIDS.  Second, once the child can pull him/herself up, they use the bumper to stand on to climb out of their crib.

  • It seems like if you're going to use a bumper, you should use it before they can use it to crawl out of the crib. If you're worried about sids, I'd say don't bother with the bumper at all. Or get a breathable bumper.

  • It's actually the other way around.  SIDS risk aside, you can't use bumpers after the baby can sit up b/c they could possible use them as a step to climb over the crib.  The SIDS risk goes down around the same time that they can move so freely, so if you've decided not to use a bumper due to SIDS risk, you probably just won't ever use it.
  • The breathable kind is safe from day one. The regular kind is never safe. By the time SIDS is no longer an issue, they're using it as a climbing aid.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most manufacturer's recommend taking the bumper's out around 5 months or when babies can pull up?

It's not just a SIDS risk either, it's also a suffocation risk....

  • I don't know if it's going to look silly or not but the bumper that comes with our bedding set I plan to use on top of the baby's dresser where I'm going to keep the changing pad. I figure I could just prop it up along the back of the dresser? If it looks stupid I will figure something else out, like cut it up and sew it into little pillows for the rocking chair and other stuff, but as for using a bumper in a crib, I registered for a breathable one.

  • We have a bumper on LO's crib right now, but will be taking it out once he goes into his crib...I don't think it's ever a safe time to have a bumper in the crib..so i'll just keep it up as decoration until he uses his!

That sounds cute!   Here are some other suggestions (just in case you don't like how it looks with the change pad):  - use it as a valance, put the bumper between the mattress and the crib (if it fits), or wrap it around the outside of the crib just in line with the mattress, you've already mentioned the pillow thing I was thinking of.  I've seen cute pics. of all those things and it always looks nice!

Its in now but we won't be using it once lo actually starts sleeping in her crib

  • My friend's DS is 14 mnths and the bumper is still in his crib. She told me she took it out a few months ago and he screamed all night for several nights. Once they put it back in, he slept all night again. I know you are supposed to take it out once they start pulling up on things. But he is still fine with it in there.

Ooh, I like the idea of tying it to the outside of the crib along the mattress line. Thanks!

  • Her crib is set up with all of the bedding including bumper.  If she sleeps in it early on, we have a sleep positioner that will prevent her from rolling in to the side of it.  When she starts being able to roll and sit up, we will probably take it out.

    .

Just in case you didn't already know, sleep positioners are in themselves a suffocation risk - apparently, LO's could potentionally wiggle down and get stuck......

  • LOL we used one from day one and didn't take it out until she moved to the toddler bed.  She never tried to climb out, but she really wasn't a climber to begin with.
  • I'll be using the bumper from the beginning.  LO will sleep in our room in the bassinet for the first 6-8 weeks, then we'll move her into the nursery.

DD1's crib had the bumper the entire time she was in it.  Never had a problem with it at all.

I had bumpers for my twins and will use one for baby #3.

  • You defnitely aren't supposed to use it in the begining (although many do). I don't know the point at which it would be ok though. There are different risks later (using them to jump out and such). I would look into a breathable one if you feel you need something.
  • I never bought or used a bumper because of the risks of SIDS.  They say that the risk of SIDS doesn't decrease until your baby is at least 1 year old, but it is best to follow safe sleep practices until age 2.    Here's a list of safe sleep practices that experts advise you to follow:  https://www.halosleep.com/keep_your_baby_safe/safe_sleep_tips/

  • We're using one from day one with no reservations, since we'll also be using a ceiling fan - it dispels the small risk that our LO will be super sensistive to extra CO2 that may pool in the crib, which I believe is considered the main cause of SIDS as per a very recent study.
