AW: Travel Date Set

I am so excited that we have a travel date set and are meeting our kids on the 16th. It's such a weird thing to have "a meeting" to get introduced to your children, but we are very excited anyway.

  • What a fantastic AW!  You must be so excited!!!  I can't imagine how anxious you are to get there and meet them already!  The look precious.  I wish you all the best in the coming months!
  • Thanks! It has taken forever to get travel approval so we are so excited to get down there. Although we are still debating whether it's better to all be in one room, but have meals provided or have more space and cook for ourself. leaning towards the latter, but not sure at all.
  • How long did it take to get your I-800 approved and your Article 5 letter?  My agency has only done a few Hague cases so far, so we're really not sure how long this is taking.

Also, I think that's a tough decision.  I think we're leaning to a larger one-bedroom with kitchenette when we go.  Most of the one-bedrooms we stayed in when we visited Peru had a queen/double and a single.  That way, we won't have to cook every day, but will have the option.  With three kids, it's got to be difficult to decide, but if you're staying in a non-suite hotel, I think I would want to be in the room with them.  If you get more than one room, would you and your DH split-up who sleeps where?

  • Our i800 took about three weeks to process, but we had a problem and it took another week and a half to submit additional information and get approval, but without the problem it would have been done at three weeks. Our Article 5 took two weeks after i800 approval. Another person I know had theirs take three weeks, and from what I understand 2-3 weeks is the normal range.

If we get more space, it would be in an apartment, so we wouldn't be in separate units like two hotel rooms. Also the apartment has a pool and playground and hotel does not. I am leaning that way especially because we will be in a large city with food delivery options if we really don't want to do food, but I also am a little nervous about it.

  • Thanks.

The apartment set-up sounds ideal.  We were thinking of going that route, too, when the time comes.  We found some great deals on https://www.sublet.com/, but since we don't know how long we'll be in Lima versus another area (wherever the kid(s) come from), we are leaving all options open.

What are you nervous about with regards to the apartment?

  • Congratulations! That's great news!

Mostly nervous about being overwhelmed at first with the kids' meltdowns and what not and then having to cook food they like. It will probably be fine. There is a website I like of Colombian recipes so that should get me started.

  • I'm worried about the food thing, too, but I figure even if you order in, it won't be just like they are used to.  At least if you have the apartment, you have the option of easing them into you cooking, while also ordering meals.  That way, it won't be a total shock when they come home.

I wonder if candm could weigh in on this, and let us know what she did with her kids?

  • oh how exciting!!!! YAY!!!

We've had some good recipes from here.

  • Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!

I would not want to cook, but that is just me. I think you will have enough on your plate without having have to worry about getting a meal prepared. On the other hand, I would also want as much room as possible. We were in a 1 room (2 double beds) hotel room which was very crowded. It was great for sleeping arrangements since I think it's best to all sleep together at first anyway (under most circumstances), but it was very cramped for living.

We ended up eating out 2xs a day and making lunch in the room (usually top ramen--not healthy, I know--but light weight so it traveled well and we could cook it in our hot water kettle--no microwave).

How long will you be there for?

  • We will be there for 3-4 weeks. We will also be there another week in Bogota, but we will definitely be staying in a B&B with meals provided and a single room there. I am worried about preparing meals (of course we can go out or have food delivered, but I don't think that's financially feasible to do all the time. More like a few times a week) while adjusting to three kids. But 3-4 weeks is a long time to be in a small hotel room packed with two full sized beds and a crib and just no where to go. Also the apartment has a pool and a playground whereas the hotel does not. We can go to the mall either way where they have rides and stuff, but those add up so we can't go all the time. So that's why I am kind of conflicted on what to do. Everyone says the first week especially is incredibly hard and not a time where you want to have additional responsibilities. But I can't even stand being with my husband for a week straight, much less 3-4. I need space for at least a little bit each day.
  • It's so exciting that you have a travel date!  Congratulations!!!
