Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Just found out that DS has RSV :(

He hasn't felt good since Saturday.  He's had a runny nose and cough and you could just tell he didn't feel good.  I think he's also getting some teeth - the poor little guy.  He was exposed to RSV at his daycare so we've been concerned that might be what it is.  Anyway, DH has been home with him the last 2 days & took him to the Dr. today and that's what he has.  They said if we'd have waited any longer he would have ended up in the hospital.  Now I feel bad for not calling sooner.  I hope he starts feeling better soon.

What exactly is RSV? I've seen a few posts about it. How do you know if LO has it?

  • RSV sucks.  My LO was hopitalized for three days with it.  FWIW, she had been closely followed by her Pedi prior to it, had been getting breathing treatmements at home, was on antibiotics for an ear infection etc. prior to being admitted.  We were at the pedi 8 times in the past month, not counting the hospital admission. There's really not a whole lot that can be done for LOs since it's a virus.

The one thing that really helped my LO was sitting in her BUMBO on the shower floor while I took a really hot shower.  She was off to the side and not getting wet, but got tons of steam (way more than if I had her outside the shower).  She was also on breathing treatments every 4-6 hours but often needed a little help before her next treatment was due.  I would use (at the rec of my pedi) sterile, nebulizer-grade saline in there and that also helped a good amount.

I hope your LO is feeling better soon.  THere's NOTHING worse that watching your LO struggle to breath.

  • Thanks so much for the advice Kimberly74.  I'm sorry to hear your LO was so sick.  That sounds horrible.  I hope it doesn't get that bad for us.  DH said they told him to have DS sleep in his carseat to help keep him upright.  He's been waking up throughout the night so I know it's hard to breath when he's laying down flat.  We go back Monday for a follow up appointment.

On a side note I just have to say all of your kids are abolutely adorable :)

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) - it's a virus that causes infection of the lungs and breathing passages and is a major cause of respiratory illness in young children.

I think the only way to tell is to be diagnosed by the dr.  They can test for it, but something I read also says a lot of them will just diagnose your LO with it based on the sypmtoms and the time of year.  Our LO has been coughing and has a runny nose.  His coughing has been getting progressively worse and that's why we called the dr.

  • DS had Bronchiolitis caused by RSV and was in terrible shape.  You feel terible because they sound and feel bad but there is nothing you can do.  I was out with LO for 10 days.

  • Do they give any medication for that?  I wonder b/c Christian's been coughing (which has gotten worse over the past couple days), and he's got a runny nose also.  He's been feeling bad since Sunday.  He had a low grade fever Sunday evening, once I gave him Tylenol it went down.

After reading this post, makes me think I should take him to the pedi.  Huh?

Jax has bronchiolitis (a form of RSV) and it really really sucks because there's nothing you can do. :( I hope they're both feeling better very soon!

We are in the same boat : (

We didn't get any medication and the pedi said we are dealing with bronchiolitis/RSV Virus.  We knew it was time to go in to the pedi when her cough sounded wet and she started wheezing.  At that point we knew it was more than an average cold.  We just do steam treatments in the bathroom, nasal bulb, saline drops, propped mattress etc.

I wasn't able to go the Dr. today but DH said they gave him a shot of something and a breathing treatment there at the office.  He has a prescription for some type of medication but I'm not sure what at this point.

Another baby in his class at daycare had RSV & they sent some information home with us to inform us about what it is.  I was reading through it last night and all the symptoms are exactly what my DS had.  But they're the same as if he just had a cold so it's hard to judge.  We finally called the dr. b/c his cough just sounded horrible and he sounded like he was wheezing last night.
