I think I'm the freak here, but I wouldn't. We were given a hand me down crib for my 2nd son, and I still went out and bought a new mattress. Nothing fancy - a cheapie one, but it was new and that mattered to me.
It would depend on who it came from, how old it was, how long it was used and how it was stored.
If it was from a family member, and had been stored inside (or just recently went unused) I would. But if It was old and had been sitting in a garage for years I'd pass.

Ditto.
We got a hand me down crib (that was minimally used but old) so I went and got a new foam mattress ($40 at Ikea) because I was worried about the amount of dust etc it might have even though it had been wrapped in plastic.
I currently am. We got a hand me down crib when Cooper was born from a friend who just moved her daughter to her BGB. I checked it out for firmness ect and it seemed good to me so I went with it.
I did for a while, but changed it due to the quality was not so great. My DH brought up an excellent point that an older mattress is better in one way, any toxic fumes given off by a new mattress have already aired out and so it is much less toxic.

We bought a used crib and crib matress off Craigslist. But it was in great condition, only 3 years old and they had the reciept so I felt good about using it.

Yep, I would! I am using my nicece's for DS. She used hers for under a year and had recently stopped using it when she started co-sleeping. But I agree with others about depending on who it was from and how old.

I probably wouldn't....we did get a hand me down crib but bought our own mattress.
I'm kind of weird about mattresses, though. I think it goes back to a 20/20 I saw years and years ago.
