TTC After a Loss

Too soon for AF after lap surgery? (possible TMI)

Good morning ladies,

Today is 10 days since my laparoscopy surgery to remove an ectopic. Yesterday I started bleeding a bit - mostly brown w/ some dark red mixed in. I'd classify it as "heavy spotting." I had my F/U appointment with my doctor and mentioned the bleeding. He said it could still be some shedding from before, but that it could also be my period. I was surprised, because I wasn't expecting it for at least 4 weeks. Last night, the bleeding started to get a little heavier and I woke up this morning with a full pad. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed a big clot of tissue and a lot of blood.

I posted this here because I was hoping some of you who've had the surgery could tell me if this sounds like it could be AF. I've understood that sometimes the first AF is heavier than usual. Is it normal to still pass clots of significant size? Does 10 days post-surgery seem too soon to have a period? I hesitate to call my dr. back so soon because he did say it could be my period but that I won't know for sure until 4 weeks from now when I get another one.

TIA for any input. :)

  • hmmmm......I had failed laparoscopy surgery and then a laparotomy surgery and did not get my period until between 4 and 5 weeks.  I bled for about 2 weeks after the surgery, but it was not heavy or with any clots.  My period wasnt as heavy as I was warned either (although the second was).  I just find it hard to believe that it would be your period so soon, but I'm no medical expert.  Thats a hard one.  I would give it another day and maybe then follow up with your dr. just so you dont have to wonder.

  • I can an ectopic removed in December.  I bleed or approximately 10 days after my surgery.  AF showed 31 days after.  I don't recall any clots.  My only thought is maybe there was some tissue remaining from the pregnancy.  My first  m/c I had clots for a while after the miscarriage.

So sorry for your loss and best of luck to you

  • Hi,
Firstly, I am so sorry about your loss.  Were they able to repair your tube?

I actually had a laparotomy for my ruptured ectopic and was bleeding for 5-7 days after my surgery, but it didnt stop and then start again, it was consistent.  I ended up getting my first AF 34 days (only 6 days beyond when it should have been due) after my surgery and it was a full AF.   So I do believe that it's possible to get back on track fairly quickly........I would stay on top of it and if it's concerning, stay in touch with your doctor.
