It is the only cup I've gotten him to take that he can't make leak. The nuby one he presses down, makes a big puddle of water, and splashes it. VERY cute, but not so fun to clean up multiple times a day. I don't know of any other soft spouted cups. Straw cups, harder spouted sippy cups are a no go in our house. They can't have a valve. He will not take them... that's another story...
So anyway, this week he is REFUSING to drink out of a cup. DH caves and puts his milk, water, etc... in a bottle, but I've been trying to get him to take the cup. DH doesn't want him dehydrated, so he goes with the lesser of the two evils. All that being said, we suspect that this refusal is related to teething. You can see the fronts of at least one of his bottom eye teeth (can't get a good look at the other side) and he has all the other symptoms of teething. Is it possible that this cup irritates his gums so he won't use it??? Or is he just being lazy and not drinking out of his cup because daddy is giving him a bottle... WDYT?
Re: cups & teething
We were having issues with Macy and drinking out of cups as well. Well, her problem was mainly drinking milk out of cups (she would drink water out of them just fine). We decided to just cold turkey get rid of bottles. It was very hard at first and we were also afraid of dehydration. Our pedi assured us this would not happen. Maybe check with your pediatrician, but I'm pretty sure that they all agree no bottles after 15 months (I have a friend going through same struggle with her 16 month old and her pedi said same as mine).
We were worried it was teething for awhile but then realized we had to give the bottles up regardless. Up until this week (we stopped bottles around Christmas time) Macy was only drinking about 1-2 cups of milk a day and sips of water. We made sure to give her lots of yogurt, cheese, etc to make up for not drinking as much milk. Finally this week she gave up her fighting of cups. She has all the sudden started drinking milk voluntarily. Our pediatrician said it's more important to get rid of the bottles than worry about getting enough milk. She said at this age babies should be getting more calories and calcium from food and not need as much milk. I know it is really hard to get rid of bottles (believe me we wanted to cave and give her bottles when she cried) but I think getting rid of them cold turkey is best. We tried just cutting 1-2 out a day and that was worse because she would think she would get a bottle later so she wouldn't worry about drinking from the cup. We realized, at least for Macy, bottles had become a comfort item and the longer we gave them to her, the harder is was going to be to get rid of them.

Will he drink out of a regular cup with no spout or valve. Like a regular adult cup? I think we started Katie around this age giving Katie drinks out of a regular glass. We didn't let her hold the cup, but she drank when we offered it to her.
Now, we are on the tail end of getting rid of the sippy cups. She gets a regular toddler cup with all her meals. We do have the occasional spills, but mostly she does amazing with it. She can even walk holding a glass and get it to the coffee table without a mess.
Katie: 1/16/08 2lbs. 15oz.
Abby & Emily: 12/31/10 6lbs. 2oz. & 5lbs. 7oz.
Thank you for this. We were SOOOO close to being done with them and then he started refusing cups. (I had used 1 bottle/day for 4 days in a row). I showed your reponses to dh and I'm not sure he's convinced... but maybe he will be after this weekend and I'm home and he's not by himself.
