Full bladder for big u/s?

My u/s is tomorrow!!!  I'm so excited!  Is it helpful to have a full bladder or does it not really matter?

Re: Full bladder for big u/s?

  • My Dr's office makes you have a full bladder, some do not. If they didn't mention it when you scheduled than I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I dont know if this is how all docs do it. But mine had me go before..I dont think it really matters for the u/s.

  • I was required to have a full bladder, but she let me pee halfway through.
  • A full bladder makes them all scrunched up. When my bladder was empty she stretched right out!! I actually told the tech that i had a full bladder and she made me go pee before starting.

  • I had to have a full bladder for mine.  Though I drank about half as much as I did for my 12 week one.  There was no way I was going to hold all of that!

Edit:  If you go in "too full", they'll just let you pee it out.  Err on the side of full.

  • The ultrasound tech I had made me empty my bladder before the ultrasound. I would call the office and ask, Or, just plan to have a full bladder just in case and if you don't need to have a full bladder they will have you go the restroom before the u/s.
  • Nope.  By 18-20w a full bladder is not necessary.  My office even makes you pee again before you go in.

Not sure why some offices make you do it.

  • When I made my appointment, they told me the only thing was not to go to the bathroom for an hour beforehand. They said I didn't need to drink loads of fluids too, just don't go for an hour before.

  • The full bladder supposedly gives them a better and clearer view. It is not pleasant though!
  • My office always makes you leave a urine sample when you check in (no matter what you're there for).  Today for my big u/s, I went to go leave the sample and the receptionist said, "Make sure you empty your bladder completely".

If you're unsure, call the doctor and ask what their policy is.

  • I had to have a full bladder. I drank so much it was painful so she took the picture of my cervix (which is why they need your bladder full) and then let me pee for the rest of the ultrasound.

  • mine doesn't make you have a full bladder, should be visible without it.  It is really uncomfortable to have a full bladder while they are pushing all over!

This...I went in with a FULL bladder and told the u/s tech that is was full.  She made me go pee b/c she didn't want to stop the u/s in middle of getting good images.

  • I have to go to a seperate place for my ultrasound (Advanced Radiology) and I received a letter saying I need to drink 16 oz of water before the ultrasound. I will cry if they push and press all over my uterus with a full bladder. I really hope I can pee after they get whatever pictures they need.

  • Before I had my ultrasound I was instructed not to use the bathroom for an hour before.  However, when we were going to the ultrasound room, the tech asked me if I wanted to go beforehand.  So of course, I went!  :)

  • I've been instructed to drink something like 32 oz of water an hour before my u/s.  Having just gone to my N/T a couple of weeks ago with similar instructions, and being made to go in the middle (despite going right before because I was in pain and couldn't take it) I am not listening to the orders.  I think the best advice is to just make sure you're hydrated, and don't pee right before.  That way if there is a picture they need with a full bladder, you should be okay, but you won't be in pain while they push that thing around on your belly.

I'm so nervous and excited too!!!!  My appointment is at 3pm.  I have no idea how I'll make it through the day!  GL tomorrow!

  • I was told to come in with a "full bladder."  But they said that I really only needed to drink about 12 oz of water to = a full bladder.
  • i didnt have a full bladder but i didnt pee once i got there so i had a little bit in there - when i went for my ultrasound at the genetic doctor to check a few things, there was a big sign that said you didnt have to have a full bladder - needless to say i went pee! lol

  • It's good to have a full bladder so they can get a good look at your cervix. It really depends on the tech though, some will go on to do measurements and come back once the bladder fills..some want it full when you start, and get mad that you are not prepped and ready to go. Id just be safe and drink.

  • That is where I work :) They will just check your cervix then let you empty and finish the rest of the exam.

  • Had mine today (BOY!) and I had to have a full bladder.  I knew that ahead of time though.  After the tech measured the placenta, she let me use the restroom!  (heavenly release!!)  I had to finish drinking 32 fl.oz. of water 1 hour before my appointment and then hold it!  By the time I was allowed to "void" I had been holding it over 2 hours and I was doing the potty dance!

    GL with your appointment tomorrow!

  • I would call, I had a full bladder before my big U/S visit and my tech had me empty out my bladder (she said it was too full)
