Advice on sleeping and naps for 5-week-olds...

Hi Everyone,

I don't really have a specific question but am looking to get advice and general feedback on twins' (or even just babies') sleep schedules at this age.

My girls' schedule is generally wake-up, eat (tandem breastfeeding usually), have about 30-60min. of "play time" (reading them a book, talking to them, singing a song, play mat, etc.), and then they get drowsy (yawning, fussy cry, etc.) and need a nap.  BUT, they absolutely cannot get themselves to sleep.  They need their vibrating chair, the swing, swaddling and shushing, and some elaborate combination of the above to fall asleep, which can take an hour.  Then, sometimes they'll only sleep restlessly for 30 min. (just enough time for me to pump, shower, eat, whatever) or they'll sleep for maybe an hour and then wake-up hungry because it's already been 3 hours since they last ate (they're 7lbs + a little these days).  And they cannot fall asleep in their crib, only the swing or vibrating chair will do it.

Is this "typical"?  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • All I can remember of those early weeks is that Emerson's sleep/awake schedule was every 2 hours.....awake 2 hrs/asleep 2 hrs.  I don't look forward to this part.  lol-

  • I don't have advice but will be watching this thread because I have one baby with the same issues. Eli would never sleep if he had his choice even though he always looks sleepy. He'll sit in a bouncy chair and stare around for hours and it takes forever and multiple props to get him to sleep. Nights are OK though. James sleeps like a champ.
