Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Adding rice cereal at 3 months?

I have a call into our pedi, but DD turns 3 months tomorrow and I think we are about ready to add a little rice cereal to her formula. Did anyone else start this early?

She was sleeping through the night, but now won't go longer than 3 hours - and wakes up FAMISHED. She's in the 97th percentile for height and 93rd for weight, so she's tall, but not chunky - she's proportionate, but has grown so rapidly recently... Just wanted to get your experiences. TIA

Re: Adding rice cereal at 3 months?

  • Just so you know, adding rice cereal will not make her sleep longer.  It is usually only used if baby has reflux or other issues.

  • we started at 3 months 2 weeks or maybe a little before.  I got the OK from the ped. first, but my decision was based on the fact that my DS was already 20lbs at 3 months.  He was wanting to eat every 2 hours & was "showing interest" in food.  I also believe that although it's not recommended, every baby is different, and this is what DH and I decided would be best for our child. Any study always concludes "most babies"  not "all babies." Do what you think is best for you!  FWIW, So far, he's done really well on it.
  • I started DS1 on rice cereal when he was about this age, he was so *hungry* all the time. He loved it - has always been 95th/97th percentile and eats more than either of us these days. His dad is tall, and I think his biology is pushing him really hard in this direction. It really depends on the baby - LO was certainly not ready for cereal at 3 months. They are all so different!
  • Thanks girls. She does have 'slight' reflux, plus a milk protein intolerance. Regardless... It was my understanding (per pedi & others) that it would fill her belly more & therefore she'd sleep longer & not wake up so upset. She's gotten to the point where during normal feedings, she'll take about 4-6 oz, be satisfied, burp & maybe spit up a little and not be able to eat anymore..but then be hungry again shortly after. I was just asking for others' experiences.

Pallorina - My DH is tall too, 6'7", so we expect her to always be long and to grow quickly. We're thinking this is why she's so hungry.

    Thanks for your input, ladies!

  • DD had her 4 month appt. this week and our pedi suggested this for us as well.  (I'm not sure if this will be helpful for you since my dd is a month older).  Our pedi said that it might help with dd's spit-up and *might* help her sleep through the night (she said that it wasn't proven to help STTN, just anecdotally).

We haven't tried it yet, but I'm considering it.

  • Could it be the 3 months growth spurt...DD wanted to eat all the time for about a week, but then her feedings were all out of wack and unpredictable up until about 2 weeks ago.

THIS!!!  Be careful not to confuse growth spurts with readiness for solids.  I think you should still talk to your pedi about this.  It's like how EVERYONE thinks their kid's teething just because they're drooling a lot or chewing on their hands.  DD has been doing this since 3 months and still no teeth.
