Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO has tubes in their ears come in...

DD had tubes put in her ears when she was 5 months old. This will be her first real summer and I am really bummed that she won't be able to go buck wild in the water. Has anyone used ear plugs for their LO? Were they ok with them? Where can I get them and anything I should watch out for?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am so afraid DD is going to be afraid of the water without adequate exposure.

  • We were told that DS didn't need plugs, that he can play as normal.  You may want to double check with your doctor...

  • Our doctor didn't give us any restrictions on water (i.e. playing in the pool or ocean). If DD went like 2 feet underwater we would have to put drops in her ears but they said nothing about using ear plugs.

  • I had them when I was little... twice :(  I was always restricted with water and hated it.  I was a little behind on swimming versus my sister because of it.
  • REALLY? He just said not to dunk her under and I thought that meant not at all. So they can go underwater??? What kind of drops would I need to put in? You guys may have just made my day!

DH and I are water people and have been so upset about this.

Ditto this, but the ENT also said to use ear plugs for the first month or two after having tubes put in.  We used the kind DH used when he had to go out to oil rigs and cut them in half.  The only time they have mentioned ear plugs was involving ocean water and lake water (something about risk of infection).  Playing in tap water and chlorine-treated water is no big deal.  HTH.

  • I am so confused. I know her ENT says to keep her ears dry. Guess I need to call him.
  • DD had her tubes done on 2/1. We were told for 2 weeks to keep her ears dry. At her follow-up appointment yesterday he said normal activity in the bath can resume (i.e. its ok if her ears get wet now). He also said she doesn't need plugs for the pool...only for the lake or beach. HTH!
